Top Sheets

I wouldn't be able to sleep without the top sheet tucking me in but I did find difficulty buying top sheets recently. It seems that it is now the 'norm' not to have a top sheet and so not all shops sell them now. I went and stocked up. Thinking ahead, eh?

You can buy duvets with different tog ratings on either side which might suit those with different heat requirements.

As for ironing sheets of any description......life is too short!!

I iron pillow cases and duvet covers. Not sheets - just fold them.
Ive never had fitted sheets voming off - i find they stay on much better than the old flat sheets. Funny how we have different experiences!

Yes Mermaid6 I do iron my sheets and pillowcases, as well as the duvet cover.

If its a really hot summer I tend to have bottom sheet and duvet. Its getting on for winter down here so the old flanelette sheets will come out again soon, so cosy on a frosty night!

Ha! I have a flannelette duvet cover and bottom sheet. So luxuriously comfy as I snuggle into the duvet. If I get too warm I stick my leg out of the side. Simples!

I have a top sheet in the winter, even flannelette as I find I feel much warmer and don't like polycotton next to my skin when it's cold plus the duvet cover doesn't need changing so often.

Yes ajanela and if you went to bed in a nylon nightie, when you got out in the morning, sparks flew!!

I think a problem with fitted sheets coming awry is they are not ''deep enough'' - I solved this by buying extra deep fitted sheets.

In the summer I change my pillowcases mid week, duvet cover and sheet weekly. No top sheet any more though.

And they all have to be 100% cotton, it is far cooler to sleep in than polycotton I think.

As a child yes we had 2 flat sheets top and bottom with blankets and eiderdown, and even candle wick bedspreads.
The duvets became popular in the late 60's also fitted sheets, never used a top sheet with a duvet,

A duvet must be down/feather and encased in a pure cotton cover. The whole point is that it's light, warm and comforting. It nestles around the body, trapping warm air in and keeping draughts out. A top sheet completely defeats the whole object. Buy blankets.

In theory I change the top and bottom sheets and pillow cases every week (but sometimes they go two weeks) and the duvet cover once a month.

We also have a fitted bottom sheet, flat top sheet and duvet. As others have said it means you dont have to wash duvet covers all that often. I HATE changing a superkingsize duvet cover, ironing it and putting it onto duvet is a real pain! We never get in a tangle with it- its tucket in at the bottom as DH doesn't like his feet poking out, but not at the sides. And we both carefuly pull it up and fold it over the duvet at the top when we get in. Also if its hot we have just the sheet or sheet and one blanket. Much more flexible!
However I don't bother with a top sheet for visitors as when i did it ended up in a tangle at the bottom and I had to wash the sheet and the duvet cover! (This was family of course.) I'm happy to have just a duvet for holidays as I dont haveto change the cover! I dont find it makes any difference to comfort!

Top and bottom for me as well, as duvet covers fade with too much washing. As for pillowslips, 4 on bed during day, but only sleep on one each side(plain one) so matching duvet ones sit on bedside chair and get washed with duvet monthly.

One bottom sheet only for me, and it has to be a flat sheet. I hate fitted sheets as they always seem to become dislodged during the night. Flat sheets and hospital corners, you cannot go wrong.

Top sheet for me. I leave it loose and just tuck the bottom corners in so I don't feel constricted.

Ironing sheets!?? These days I fold them (after laundering of course) and then place them under the seat cushion of DH's armchair, 3 days later they look OK.

Yep! top and bottom for me too. Fitted on bottom flat on top. Wash sheets weekly and duvet cover when needed. Plus can throw duvet off if gets too warm and just have sheet over. Like to have something over me. Interesting....I thought I may be in minority but seems not.

Same here. Like the idea of less frequent duvet cover changing struggles but DH can't cope and always ends up on top of sheet and me under. So gave up

I have often thought that when we fell in love withcontinental quilts,probably after holidays in Austria, that the point of them was that they settled around your body perfectly and naturally. A top sheet would prevent that. As indeed putting a cover on the duvet. But I use a cover, but no top sheet.
