Frying pans

I succumbed to a ceramic frying pan in Home Bargains today - £4.29. Then I saw the Aldi pan sets but thought better of it - I've been throwing out old pans this weekend.

Seems to be ok so far on a gas hob. He does know to cook slowly and at a lower heat, and so far is doing it!

Take care if you are using a Rayburn or Aga. I bought one and after a week or so the coating had gone and everything was sticking worse than any other pan I have used. I bought another a couple of weeks ago from John Lewis (who tell me it is OK with a Rayburn) and it seems to be fine so far, so check the one you are buying is suitable for the hob you are using.

I have a small ceramic coated frying pan which is perfect for fried eggs for breakfast. It is brilliant, they never stick! I would recommend a ceramic frying pan to anyone. Go ahead when, I'm sure you'll love it.

I got a good one from Lakeland several years ago which was recommended by Delia Smith and it has stood me in very good stead. It is versatile enough go in the oven if I want to make a fritata or a tarte tatin.

The Cook (aka DH) bought one from Tesco's and has now used it several times to good effect. He is delighted with it and I am delighted with what he has cooked in it. Thank you all for your advice.

Bought one last week and it is excellent. Got it in Wilko and use on an induction hob with no problems. Replaces a cast iron pan I have been using since 1966 - still in perfect condition but needs anOlympic weightlifter to heft it around!

I am waiting for them to come into Lidl again next week I bought the small one last time they had them on sale I need the frying pan now as all the non-stick on my tefal one has come off.

I bought a ceramic omelette pan last year, having been assured that it was suitable for induction hobs. Well it is, sort of, except that it will only work on one of the rings (inconveniently, one at the back) and unlike my other induction pans, which heat up in no time flat, the ceramic pan takes an absolute age to heat up. It is, though, brilliantly easy to clean! I've stopped using it.

The reason you cook at a lower heat is, I believe, because the ceramic holds the heat better (rather like a copper bottomed saucepan), so it doesn't need a high temperature - and too high a temperature simply overheats and burns the food.

I bought two in Aldi and they've been great.

Bez, yes the food still browns/crisps if that's what you want. Like AshTree I worried my white one would burn/be difficult to clean, it doesn't. shysal - mine is from TKMaxx as well. Great bargains to be had in the kitchen section, oh yes and the bedding section

I love mine too, still as good as new. It was cheap from TK Maxx, where there was a huge selection. I also have a ceramic saucepan for porridge. After a short soak the residue floats off in a sheet.

Very interested in this - if you are cooking at a lower temp does the food still brown and crisp up if you need it to?

Yes, I bought one about 3 months ago and I'm very pleased with it. As Iam64 says, you cook at a lower heat otherwise things are inclined to burn and stick. Mine is also white, which concerned me at first because I thought it would become marked easily but no, it washes so easily and still looks like new. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!

I bought one several months ago. It's great, you cook at a low heat and simply wash with hot soapy water. Mine is white - and still like new.
