Just Too Hot to Get Any Sleep

Forgive me Gransnetters if this is in the wrong category but I don’t post very often. My health is suffering through lack of sleep and I’m wanting to buy the best double cooling sheet and pillowcases I can possibly afford. Don’t laugh but I started by looking at pet cooling mats until I realised that I can get them for human beings. I’ve skirted through a well known online retailer which I usually use and am happy to use, but the choice is too much. Has anyone bought a double cooling sheet or cooling mat that actually keeps them cool for a reasonable time.

We just sleep stretched out like starfish with a sheet to cover us if we feel cooler later on.A large fan set on medium all night long and window and door left open.Up at 6a.m to get things done before we have to go to work or do things.

I'm in a spare room with the fan. I've had it on all night o/h doesn't like the noise, damn the noise I can't stand the heat, it's just so hot. My son rang his dad from the US for father's day yesterday, they're in Miami, I asked about the weather, "boiling hot and very still" just like here then grin

I once read that lying on a large bath towel helps. Tried it and found it does. Using it now. Admit that my towels are tumble dried so soft, a rougher line-dried towel would prob be rather scratchy.

Well, you could exfoliate at the same time. smile

Another good night's sleep for me.If I had a cooling pad I would need a hwb. My duvet is 15 tog and I wouldn't dream of putting a lower tog on.. As said earlier I can fold it over if extremely warm but most times, like Bluebelle I need it.

I couldn’t sleep last night despite a fan,so went downstairs with a book about David Hockney and ate a whole tub of coffee ice cream (Jude’s Flat Coffee - bought last week when on offer). Nicely cooled and then went to sleep. Downside is my expanding non existing waist if the heat continues. 85th birthday imminent so should I be concerned? Only upbeat replies will be considered.🤣

I'm back, 80 euros worth of fan and face sprays!

MissAdventure Mon 22-Jun-26 10:14:41

You'll be sleeping well tonight, then smile

I have dog cooling pads and only wish my dog would use them. I find they are great to put your feet on.

Casdon Mon 22-Jun-26 10:41:46

My dog won’t use them either westendgirl, he goes to lie on the ceramic tiles by the front door when it’s hot, he’s too wussy to come back up on his own, so he then howls for me to walk up the stairs behind him.

I would love to use a fan but must be the only one who when using a fan or in a draught can get excruciating neck and shoulder pain.

crazyH Mon 22-Jun-26 11:40:17

Fallingstar - I had the ceiling fan on last night and I had severe neck pain - I thought my rather old pillows were the cause.
Now , I am suspecting the fan 😫 And yet, how do I get some sleep 😫 can’t win

I’m the same. I had a tower fan on all night positioned so it blew away from me and made sure my back was covered as I have sciatica at the moment but woke up feeling worse than yesterday.
I wouldn’t have been able to sleep without the fan though. 😫

It does sound like the fan but change your pillow just in case.
I use hot water bottles put in the freezer and a spray bottle with a light mist to put on my sheets in the night.
But when all else fails I have a cool shower in the early hours.

I’ve been sleeping with just an empty duvet cover over me since the hot spell in May. For the hot week ahead I’m going to rinse and spin an old single flat sheet and try sleeping with that across me, I hope it won’t make the mattress mouldy, ill have a fitted sheet and mattress protector under me.

It’s freezing in South Australia! When it is hot I sleep with the air con. on - the hum of it is quite soothing . You can get portable ones, too and some are reverse cycle so you can use them as heaters in cold weather. We need them here, it gets very hot for weeks on end.

vegansrock Mon 22-Jun-26 13:41:15

I fill my hot water bottle with cold water and put in the freezer.Ive also got a rechargeable neck fan which look a bit like smart headphones you wear round your neck from Amazon which keeps my head really cool! My DS got air con in his house last year so I can always go round there. I expect the Air con guy is very busy - my DH has booked him to give us a quote.

A Meaco fan it’s like a cool breeze and very silent. Thin sheet over you or 1 tog duvet and the fan pointed towards your back or wherever is best for you. 👌🏻

Buy an air conditioner! I’ve got one in my living room. Plumbed in like a tumble dryer. I sleep on the sofa!

WelshPoppy Mon 22-Jun-26 14:14:07

I've had my best sleeps on the warmest nights lately. Window slightly ajar, curtains closed, lying on top of folded down duvet. Wake up 8 hours later curled up under said duvet.

Maggi123 Mon 22-Jun-26 14:15:48

I've just bought a portable air conditioner on Amazon - £246. Well reviewed for taking temperature down as low as 17 degrees no matter how high the ambient heat. Just needs to be vented through an open window. Fingers crossed it arrives by tomorrow!

vintageclassics Mon 22-Jun-26 14:22:38

I invested in a Air conditioner 5 years ago - it only gets used a few days every summer but our bedroom is like a fridge! It is noisy but you get used to it and sleep is blissful!

cakehunter Mon 22-Jun-26 14:24:09

We’ve had proper aircon fitted. One powerful unit for the south facing kitchen/diner/ conservatory, and one in the bedroom. Its bliss! Running costs have been a pleasant surprise! If you only had a unit in the bedroom it would probably cost less than £1000, and worth every penny. Cheap temporary fixes just can’t deal with these new temperatures we’re having.
