I started on this medication just over three weeks ago for the above issues - I've been having very unpleasant side effects, nausea, headaches, blurred vision and can you believe it - insomnia!
It has helped with the anxiety to some extent and stabilised my mood and the nausea and headaches have gone now. But my insomnia is now very bad, worse than before I went on the medication, every night now I lie awake until 2 or 3am, wide awake. Or awake/doze but then 4 or 5am wake up for a couple of hours. I end up sleeping in with a few hours of deep sleep in the morning. Before this medication I used to get at least one decent night's sleep every 3 or 4 nights.
I went back to the doctor and he said I have to give the medication six weeks but if I have worse insomnia now, and after three weeks, I can't see it improving. I still have blurred vision too.
Prior to Velofaxine he tried me on Mirtazapine but on that I had no appetite control whatsoever, could not stop eating and put on a stone in weight very quickly. At least the Venlofaxine has supressed my appetite so I have lost the weight I gained.
Does anyone on Gransnet have experience of Venlofaxine?
I should add that I have had anxiety issues since my 40's and been on the merry go round of various medications. My insomnia got a lot worse after the menopause. I have tried so many things and I have been assessed and am now on a waiting list for CBT, although I don't have much hope that will help. I am permanently exhausted. The insomnia has led to depression which I never had before - it was just anxiety.
I was on Citalopram for many years and when I retired I weaned myself off it. I had put weight on and lost it all when I stopped. But then, after a couple of years and some personal issues my anxiety and insomnia started up again so this time I was prescribed Amytriptiline. After a year this stopped working - then on a routine medication review I was told it can cause dementia so came off it. I struggled on and then in September last year more personal issues and my anxiety reached new levels! So back on the medication ....
I also tried HRT but that did nothing for the insomnia, I didn't expect it to but I will try anything. I could write a book - I know everything about sleep hygiene, CBD oil, meditation, apps, white noise, I have read numerous self help books, tried oils you name it.
I am now resorting to the occasional diazepam or zopiclone because I feel this permanent insomnia will cause long term harm to my health. I just have to get some sleep. I am fit and well in other respects.
Sorry for long post!
