Tongue surgery, terrified!

Has anyone had a tongue polyp removed? Is it as bad as I am imagining? I am very anxious as I have a needle phobia.

Buy Emla cream from a good pharmacy and apply 1hr before treatment. You will not feel the needle at all. I have used it before having a cannula in my hand. I didn’t feel a thing.

Oh dear, I think Emla is for skin - not inside mouths! Oragel is OK though. I'd take painkillers too, about an hour before as 'insurance' just in case it gets sore. I bet it's nowhere near as bad as you think!

Hetty58, I was assuming it would be a general anaesthetic. ?

I had a tongue biopsy a few years ago Haydnpat and remember they sprayed my tongue with a local anaesthetic spray before they started . I am not going to pretend the injections were pleasant because they weren’t but they really weren’t anywhere near as bad as I feared they would be. The wound itself healed really fast too . Any chance of a Valium (or2) from your GP to take before you go ? Might be worth asking .......

Why are you scared? Obviously it’s not going to hurt and you know it’s benign so you don’t have to worry about them finding anything sinister. My 89 year old mum has injections into her eyes for wet AMD but takes it all in her stride. What is it about needles that terrifies you so much?

A little insensitive MaggieTulliver. Just because someone else has a different condition and is not afraid of needles doesn’t help our friend here.

You will not be the first person to be visibly upset at the hospital.

A friend of mine had this done and said it wasn't too painful and the result was nothing worrying either.

Really helpful * MaggieTulliver*, well done. FWIW my almost 90 year old MiL has injections for the same condition and she gets quite upset by them and very anxious about them. Does that make her less of a woman, perhaps?

OP - I can well understand how nervous you must be feeling. Could you phone the hospital and see if they could offer any sedation? Failing that, your GP should be able to prescribe a few diazepam to take the edge off your nerves. Good luck

My Dad has the same injections into his eye as your mum but it doesn’t mean I don’t shake at the thought of going to the dentist Totally unnecessary and a little compassion goes a long way or don’t post at all if you don’t have any

sirchenjin my doctor wouldn’t prescribe any one off diazepam when I asked I only wanted a couple before some complex dental treatment but he point blank refused saying they don’t do that any more Lucking I had a lovely friend who gave me a couple ?

Oh that’s a shame Bluebelle. My GP prescribes a couple for me if I’m having dental work done - like you I have a dental phobia and they’re really helpful for that.

I’m not sure being scared has much to do with it, Maggietulliver. I'm ok with needles, I’ve had plenty in my time, but I needed a particular injection for dental work recently and it bloody well hurt! A lot! Dentist was most apologetic. Bravery or otherwise was irrelevant.

OP, I hope it isn’t as bad as you fear.

My mother had something removed from under her tongue many years ago the removal was fine but her tongue was very sore afterwards and it reduced the food she could eat - jelly and ice cream were helpful to her - maybe you could make sure you had some ready for your return home..

When I had my knee replacement under sedation the anaesthetist gave me what he called an 'intravenous gin and tonic'. It was lovely! Very relaxing.
