It isn't too minor to bother your GP with. Usually a simple infection (presume you don't have any piercings there!), or maybe a small sebaceous cyst. Doc can take a swab and advise on treatment. Meanwhile saline bathing and keeping it dry is good.

It is far more common than you might think, but it is best to clear it up as quickly as possible so give the GP a ring.

Yes I've had it .. Twice in my life .. Don't know what caused it but all I could think of was I had worn tighter means and the brass button had been in contact with my belly button.
I just bathed it with salt water and put sa vlon cream in for a few days and it cleared up but I remember the pong well. Pheweee!!!!

You must see your GP. It is likely to be just an infection, but it really does need checking out properly.

It's probably a fungal infection. It was an occasional problem in the nursing home I used to work in. A good anti fungal cream will help. Failing that, then you could try some steroid cream.

I am a retired GP. It is best to clean it with salty boiled water and cotton wool three times a day. Pat dry with a clean towel and then dry thoroughly with cool hair dryer. If no better by Monday you may need to see your GP for an antibiotic cream to apply. Hope it settles quickly.

Belly buttons do get fungal infections sometimes. Not surprising really, considering that they are like little tunnels with no ventilation ! I keep mine clean with cotton buds dipped in methylated spirits once a week. Or you could get some fungal cream from the chemist. good luck !

Thank you everyone. Sounds like I'm doing the right thing at the moment. I'll see how it is by Monday and if it hasnt improved see my GP.

I dry mine after a shower by poking the knickers I have just removed down it - less bulky than a towel!

Every now and again when I have had a sore belly button, I have used Mycota talc, which soon works. It was used by DH after having athletes foot. There us also a cream, same make.
