Grapes hazard for young children

I've seen a lot of Facebook sharing of the grape hazard, and recommending cutting them in half.
Who remembers the horrors of swallowing a gobstopper almost whole?!

I feel the same way about cherries! I have a morbid fear that one or other of my GDs is going to choke on a cherry stone, but DD doesn't seem to bother and I'm sure I didn't when she was little...

Always cut these in half, lengthways, like Luckygirl.

My little DGS2 loves olives, Nelliemoser. I'll be chopping them in half in future.

Same here luckygirl, I always used lto cut them lengthways for the littlies and explain but the family would laugh, saying I was scaremongering. So sad to hear a little one has suffered in this way.

I have always chopped up these items for my now three yr old DGS he loves these things. He also goes for olives if there are any on the table and we have to be careful he doesn't grab them.

When GS was small I always used to cut his grapes up and even then I would sit there and made sure he chewed them. I was terrified he would choke on them, and nuts, and sweet, and ..... . Even now, I tell him to make sure he chews grapes. I don't think I ever made a similar fuss with my children.

Another one that worries me is the cherry tomato. Perfect size for just popping into the mouth!

Years ago I was in a medical museum and one exhibit was a windpipe complete with pickled onion stuck in it

PS I used to make a big point of demonstrating this when I was teaching Food Tech.

Horrible thoughts of a yr 7 making a fruit salad at home and tiny brother or sister falling victim to a grape!!

I've always cut grapes lengthways for small children, ditto cherry tomatoes.

Same precaution for elderly people.

Oh dear, Luckygirl, it's been the other way round with me (but no longer). I've always thought the DGS's parents were being a bit fussy cutting them up. You're never too old to learn.

GS6 had a choking incident with a whole grape, which frightened him and his parents. The whole family them chose to halve all grapes lengthways. Better safe than sorry!
