Trochanteric Bursitis

I started with hip pain about 7 months ago and it has gradually got worse. It's in both hips, but much worse on one side. I've had an x-ray which showed mild osteoarthritis in my hip and, three weeks ago, had a steroid injection. I've also got osteoarthritis in my knees. At first, I thought the injection had improved things - steroid injections in my hands, also affected by osteoarthritis, have worked quite well - but now I feel I'm back to square one. The pain is worse going upstairs and also at night, when it sometimes wakes me up. My GP told me to come back if the injection didn't work, so I intend to do this. Has anybody else had this? What might the GP's next step be?

I'm not sure how to make a link work so just copy and paste into your browser. It looks as if it will eventually go away on its own but it must be very difficult to handle right now, especially at night.

I had painful hip bursistis for several months recently. it was very painful when at it's worst, and I found I got achey and tired as I tried to keep the weight off that leg when walking. It woke me at night, it was so hard to lie down in anything like comfort. I also have osteo so I do sympathise.

What helped - the physio gave me exercises, and accunpuncture (NHS, waiting list only 4 weeks). Starting a yoga class got me thinking more about posture as well as helping me stretch and keep the joints moving.

I had a bursa on both hips but they have eventually gone without treatment. Losing weight and being more active helped I think.

Thank you all for your help and the useful link, ayse. I've lost quite a bit of weight since last year and am trying to be more active as well, so I'm hoping that this will help. At the moment I'm just taking paracetamol to help with the pain. However, if it doesn't improve, or disappear on its own, I will go back to the GP.
