They usually send up the flower spike and then the leaves die away, leaving the Pom Pom flower.
It’s been an odd spring, dry then cold. I’d dig up the bulbs to see if they’re still in good condition.

Did you plant them deeply enough? Shallow planting often results in bulbs coming up ‘blind’ (not flowering). However it might be premature to worry as this is a late flowering variety (midsummer onwards).

Gone to join mine I reckon. They didn’t survive the winter. As climate change is causing such unpredictable weather I’m not replacing anything that dies due to heat/drought/cold. I’m going for new plants which allegedly can cope with the conditions which caused the demise of their predecessors. A shame, but it’s a pointless waste of money to replace if they’re not going to be able to cope.

It has certainly been an odd year in the garden. My Alliums have been good but I have one solitary Agapanthus flower bud between 5 pots of different varieties. Allium leaves do dry up before they flower but I read on here that it does no harm to remove them. I saw a late summer variety with long flowering season on the Ideal World shopping channel, so ordered a couple of pots from elsewhere. It is Allium Lavender Bubbles

My red hot pokers, which have been thriving for many years, disappeared almost completely over the winter. There are a couple of timid bits appearing from the wreckage, so maybe they’ll survive and grow back. 🤞

Thank you. I think I will remove some of the dried brown leaves and wait a bit longer.
My agapanthus are looking good, several of the buds just opening. In France, coastal Brittany, they seemed well ahead of here and thriving.

It was a bad winter for plants. We lost an Agapanthus and an alstroemeria both in pots. Our 5 giant phormiums took a real hit. I’ve pulled out and cut back a lot of the leaves and there is some new growth. They do look a real mess though. I just hope they do ok but it’s going to take some time before they look anywhere near as they should.

My agapanthus are now ex-agapanthus - huge pots of matted roots without a single green shoot. I've been wondering how to get rid of them, as they're too big to move. The penstemons, reliable for years, are just tiny shadows of themselves.

Strangely, though, there are self seeded Welsh poppies everywhere, along with Honesty and Nigella - all huge, about twice their usual size!

Hetty598 I couldn't understand why my agapanthus have large, healthy looking roots but no shoots at all.

The purple penstemons are ok but the rarer ones aren't.

(but) the 'Hot lips' I bought last year are doing really well (in large pots, compost and perlite). They are just smothered in flowers and the small sized bumble bees.

But my hot lips - which were red and white are now only red - though enormous

Agapanthus grew in the garden like triffids .
At one stage , they pushed huge and very heavy rocks out of the borders .
I had massive pots of them .
I gave them away - a half dozen at a time .

This year , there is weak growth in the border and no sign of life in one of the pots .
I used to grow magnificent Dahlias with little effort - just plenty of water and a feed .

Since it's warmed up - Dahlias are no longer happy in the garden .

I guess that it's climate change .
If plants are no longer doing well then I shan't replace them with the same .
