Snowdrops

*Charley girl 5*What sort of soil is your garden in? My sister inlaw lives in in Buckinghamshire and gave me some seedlings when they have flowered and what is called "in the green ." With the leaves on."
Hers were in a very chalky soil and did not do very well.

The snowdrops in my very silty slightly acid soil grow every where. You might have to change the soil. To get a decent crop.

I have not been able to get in since Christmas. When my lovely Google tablet died before xmas.

It seems to me there have been a number of changes on how the site since I was last on. GNHQ have finally sorted it out for me.
I am hoping to get the hang of how to use it.

I have never managed to grow a snowdrop and I have tried each time I have moved so I have now given up.

chocolatepudding what a very beautiful photo. I miss Snowdrops very much as it's far too warm for them to grow in the area where I live, although I'm told they grow well in the South Island where it's cold.

I love snowdrops. They pop up when the weather it at it's worst and look so cheery, a sign of the warmer weather which eventually follows

I cant see snowdrops without remembering the Dunblane tragedy and the anti gun campaign they ran The Snowdrop Campaign .I feel happy that the spring is coming but sad about all those young lives needlessy lost .I dont know if I'll ever see them againin the future without the memory of those wee faces staring out of the newspapers filled with joy and hope for their futures .

Thirty years ago we bought a half-acre piece of land, an island in a river which has a public footpath running along the riverbank. We planted 300 trees and tried to make it into a nature reserve for the local wildlife. A few years later I planted 100 snowdrops "in the green" and I was delighted when the following year all 100 bulbs flowered. Since then the clumps of bulbs have grown and I regularly dig them up and separate all the bulbs and replant them. Now there are thousands of snowdrops. We get a lot of casual walkers along the river path and they enjoy the snowdrops. When they have finished flowering I take orders for 100 or 50 or less bulbs and sell them in aid of the local Hospice.
All our work on the island is done in memory of our baby daughter who died suddenly aged 7 months. Here is a photo taken last week

I envy you Lemongrove. Those bought in the green at this time of year will be the most successful.

I have the small variety, but the larger Spanish snowdrops do look marvellous in drifts.

They certainly do! A lot of mine are missing this year, we have several squirrel visitors.

Very fond of snowdrops. They remind me of my lovely gentle mum who died in February, when the world felt gloomy & dreadful except for the hopeful snowdrops! Always think of her when I see them.. 38 years on!

Evidently its best to buy Snowdrops 'in the green' if you want them in your garden. Sarah Raven stocks them and you plant them at the end of the flowering season.

I do love snowdrops, especially the really tiny ones that do look like drops. I am not so keen on the more showy varieties but they are always a welcome sign of spring. According to my gardening mag. now is a good time to plant them in pots as they are more likely to establish.

I brought loads of snowdrop bulbs from my Dad's garden, and planted them here, after he died. Unfortunately not many of them have come up. My DH blames mice for eating them.

I love snowdrops. Have left mine in same place for many years sheltered by a small wall and they are just beautiful this year

I bought one called "Hercule" it's large and tough. Some of them were £100 each. They are such brave little things.
