Gammon

I bought ours in Waitrose - one of the few places* I can find U.K. reared, higher welfare pork or gammon. Nearly all of it from anywhere else, except M&S, is from EU factory-farming countries. Of course that is cheaper, but there’s no way I’ll buy it.

Baked in the usual way, with a spicy orange glaze, it’s fine.
*no local butcher or farm shop, alas.

I never buy meat from supermarkets and certainly not at Christmas. THis year's gammon came from our local farm shop. Locally reared, slaughtered and butchered. Excellent.

You've got to be careful when buying gammon. Many joints have added water and are also reconstructed (that's not the right word but I can't think of it right now). They are sort of processed rather than "real" gammon joints. Sometimes it's easy to tell just by looking, but not always. They aren't necessarily cheaper either. Best to get a joint from a good butcher.

Ours is from our online butcher. As usual it is lovely. We often order it through the year as it makes a change and it's just great!!

Mine was from Aldi and was fine. Par boiled, then roasted with a honey and mustard glaze, went down a treat. What was left has been chopped up with some leftover turkey, a leek and the last bit of cream and baked in a pie. None wasted.

We had gammon from the local butcher.

Not a huge piece. I slow cooked it Christmas Eve, (we were out on the big day).

Had it cold with home made chips and eggs yesterday.

Today we are having the remainder cold with my potato, onion and cheese mash.

It was tasty, better than supermarket ones, I think.

All eaten up, none wasted.
