I've looked at both the links to recipes, and it sounds lovely, but why isn't it just called Potato and Onion Pie?

That’s what I thought, too.
But I’ll certainly be trying one once we’re into autumn - it doesn’t strike me as warm weather food.
I’d def. add some grated cheese!

Why is it called Butter Pie?

Also known as Friday Pie, it was originally created by Catholics in Preston who did not eat meat on Fridays and chose to substitute their beef with butter.

Real stick to the ribs stuff, best served in Autumn or Winter.
