Being sent out of class.

Being told off for breathing too heavily whilst concentrating on needlework next to the teacher. She said” Do you have to breathe so loudly?”
I almost held my breath whenever I was near her afterwards.
Turned out that I had deviated septum in my nose and actually only breathed through one nostril.
Scarred me for life! 😆

I was kept back in my first day at school for talking! It put me off school for a long time. Mam was waiting by the school gate and she was so annoyed that she shouted at the teacher because I was under 5years and I was shaking. I still remember that.

Being allowed to watch the funeral of Winston Churchill on the school TV. My class were very excited until we were reprimanded by the Head Teacher for not showing the reverence the state occasion deserved.

Mr Porter hitting me round the head so hard my glassws went flying.
During lunch break my mother got to hear of it.
She burst into the classroom, grabbed him by his shirt front and gave him an almighty whack round the head. Job done.

In the last year of junior school my form teacher called me up to his desk and me a book about The Impressionists, Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, Cezanne etc and talked about the artists and pictures. We hadn't been learning about any of it so seemed very random.

Since then I have loved art, especially Impressionism so I have him to thank for that. I made sure I went to the Van Gogh museum when I was in Amsterdam.

He taught us for 2 years and was a marvellous teacher, went on to be Headmaster.

Not so pleasant: I hated the Grammar school I was at, everything about it and the staff, with some exceptions.

I was talking in Biology class when the subject was 'Parasites'. Teacher suddenly stopped and said '..and beachcomber is a parasite on society'...

A poor joke [if she thought it was one], little did she know of how bad life was at home...and that she was one teacher I liked and respected. I was very upset, and never forgot it.

Worst memory I had was getting the ruler for nothing. Another group of boys had shouted at a lady cutting through the grounds of the school and everyone in the vicinity got a ruler for being there. I was so upset and still to this day hate unfairness in any way!

Being given the ruler across my hand for talking

Me too Jenpax. You didn’t by any chance to to a convent school did you. Happy slappy nuns😣

Vintagegirl Tue 20-Oct-26 16:56:52

Being asked 'how many fingers do you have?' I was 5 yrs and being interviewed by nuns to see what class I would fit into. Of course I knew up to 10 and was cross that she did not specify fingers on both hands.

Primary school, might have been six or so, school dentist came to check our teeth. She was an abrupt little German woman so her accent sounded quite harsh. Whe lined up in the hall and when she got to me I had a loose tooth she touched and without a word pulled it out! It bled on and off all afternoon. Put me right of dentists.

Writing 6/6/66 with my Osmiroid cartridge pen in royal blue ink.

It was in 1969 when my A-level French teacher wrote in my final school report that I stood absolutely no chance whatsoever of passing the exam. He was completely wrong - I passed. Sadly I never saw the guy again, but so wish I had done. I'll never understand why the teacher wrote what he did, how ever did he get it so wrong?

Before leaving school climbing down the drain pipe to get a swim as we couldn’t be expelled as we were about to leave school!

I remember that little bottle of milk too, we had to drink it before we got out at playtime which was 11 am, the teacher left the room and told us to go when we finished our milk, everyone had gone except me...I hated milk, so I left mine and went outside, when we came back in the teachers asked who hadn't finished their milk, nobody answered, she looked at me and asked if I wanted it ,and she waited till I drank it .

I feel for you, as I hated milk too. Especially when it was warmed up in the winter. Yuck!

I always remember throwing up all over my reader when I was five or six because I was made to drink warm milk. When it came to my turn to read the words I couldn’t as the page was covered in sick. The teacher unaware of what happened matched over to my little desk and slammed her hand on the page to show me the words. Then when she realized her hand was covered in sick she gave me a good slap with her other hand!

Oh yuck! Warm milk.
I also threw up over a teachers feet. I wasn't a very good traveller. I was sharing a seat with her on a bus on our way home! So embarrassing. I was probably 12/13 yeas old.

Jane Wightman being foul to me!

The art teacher being lovely despite my hopeless efforts.

Our lovely English teacher.

The cookery teacher telling me not to have children as they would starve to death if they had to rely on my cooking.

Being in Morning Assembly and feeling bored to death.

First day at school age 5. No one told me I could ask to go to the toilet. I weed on my chair, too scared to move.

Rocketstop2 Tue 20-Oct-26 19:05:54

I always remember from the very first days of school, the classrooms in Spring always had big vases of daffodils and catkins !!

Kitty55 Tue 20-Oct-26 19:14:49

Our teachers were mostly good. I remember walking into the art classroom and finding the art teacher and school secretary kissing. I don’t know who was the most embarrassed 😳

JenniRen Tue 20-Oct-26 19:55:52

Walking in a crocodile from Junior School to a cinema to watch Scott of the Antarctic.

The Nitty Nora Nurse was at the school and the class bully wrongly told everyone I had nits. Everyone screamed and ran away, then refused to sit near me, including my friends. I was utterly mortified and no amount of denials stopped it. The next day my best friend brought me a liquorice shoelace to say she was sorry for not sticking by me, but she was too frightened.

Lixy2 Tue 20-Oct-26 21:00:07

My mum being cross that I had lost yet another hankie.

Why? Because my convent kindergarten served marrow fat peas at lunchtime. I wrapped them in my hankie and ‘dropped it’ under the table.

Same school had a hopscotch grid on a raised area. Of course I fell over the edge and fractured my arm.

sankev Tue 20-Oct-26 21:47:38

In infant 2 (now year 1) I won a whole school competition after writing a story and won the penguin book ‘Rapunzel’. I was so excited I talked after putting the chairs on the table at the end of the day! Miss Rain, complete with twin set, brogues and pearls, was a very old spinster who had a nasty streak! She marched me to the front of the class and hit me across my hand with a ruler! I was absolutely mortified! I was such a good child and never did anything wrong! The stuff of my 6 year old nightmares!

I remember the little, third of a pint, bottles of milk. In the hot weather the full cream, unrefrigerated, milk used to be warm and gone off but we were still made to drink it.

I never liked drinking milk even when it was fresh. I used to swap bottles with the boy I sat next to when he'd drunk his when the teacher wasn't looking and he drank mine as well!
Thankfully we never got caught!
