Boxing Day Sales

Bea65 - I was one of those. I bought a lot of stuff at those Boxing Day sales - my Royal Doulton Dinner Service (which none of my family want), light fittings , Noritake coffee Set (given to my daughter, which is gathering in one of her storage cupboards.), a lovely Red Winter Coat, which I still use - loads of stuff actually. I very rarely bought anything for the house, unless they were in the sales. 😂

Gosh, is this really a family "tradition"?

Given Boxing Day trading wasn't a thing before the mid 1990's when the government relaxed trading laws, I'm surprised anyone had had time to make into a tradition!

No, not for me or my family, I must admit it would never occur to me to go shopping on Boxing Day. But there's plenty of voucher giving in the family.

We've never gone to the Boxing Day sales and now there are Black Friday deals and sales before Christmas it seems to have lost its meaning.
I do remember seeing queues of people on TV outside department stores on Boxing Day in years past, hoping for a bargain. I think the DGC are going shopping in a day or two to spend their Christmas money.

Most people I know seem to go out for a Boxing Day walk; we did although it was very foggy!

I've never been to a boxing day sale.
I don't think I know anyone who has done this??

I have given and received vouchers this year though. The one I gave was for a meal at a local independent restaurant and the one we received was for an Italian hand made pasta company.

I have given Clarks shoe vouchers in the past.

I always bought shoes and boots in the sales after Christmas ,there’s nota decent shoe shop to be found now my other half bought me new tan boots online and gave me them today to keep up my tradition of Boxing Day boots .

I’ve never been to a Boxing Day sale, or bought on line that day. I’m shopped out and ready for a house tidy, dog walk, read and rustle up yummy left overs

Sales seem to go on all year. The main thing is are you happy with the current price. It doesn’t matter what the original price was. You either want it or you don’t.

I have never gone shopping on Boxing Day.

Maybe vouchers aren't as popular as they once were as people fear the shop may go bust before the voucher is used?

My grandaughter went to town to change something today at M and S and they were all shut, very little going on
all done online now I ve never been to a Boxing Day sale but they were certainly a big thing and I ve seen queues and rushes on News programmes

I worked in M&S as a temp when I was at Uni. We were always open on Boxing Day and it would be bedlam - everyone bringing back all the gifts that had been bought a few weeks earlier 😄

All the staff hated it because there was so much moaning and whinging amongst the customers about their gifts it would put a bit of a downer on everything for us. I was pretty much convinced that most people just wanted the money to spend in the sales.

I have never been shopping on Boxing Day, if more people stayed away shops may think it's not worth opening allowing retail staff to have a much needed break after a busy period.

I bought a jacket this pm because I was bored, tired and needed a dopamine hit. Feel more myself now.

I certainly do not need anything. As long as I live, I will never need to buy another top. I use Amazon like a corner shop, but that must stop. It would be good to save the money I spend there.

If my energy bills increase or it becomes very cold for many days, I will need that money!

In The Times this morning it stated that the average shopper is expected to spend £236 in the Boxing Day Sales. Someone is spending that money for me.

About the last thing I’ve ever wanted to do on Boxing Day is go shopping!
Each to their own, though….

Interesting to hear on R4 earlier that several major stores have gone against their usual custom, and not opened today.
I dare say a lot of the staff have been pleased to have the two full days off.

Last time we went to a boxing day sale was 2003.
Went for a corner unit.
DH saw a full set of
Corner unit,
Table and chairs
Wall unit
TV stand
Stereo unit
2 side units
All for £5000 in cherry wood. Should have been nearer £10k.
All these years later they still look like new.

Now we prefer to go out for a walk.

I’m very happy that some major stores are still closed. I don’t understand why our family members can’t have two guaranteed days off in a year. There are generally 363 days to shop. I don’t think I’ve been Boxing Day shopping at all. I can’t stand the crowds of people pushing and shoving.

Aldi I’d generally closed and good for them.

I never understood post -Christmas sales crowds. Where on earth did they get the money from? Christmas accounted for all my spare cash in December and January

I think some people have money for Christmas and others perhaps saved to buy something they couldn't afford when it was full price.

On our way home we noticed Lidl was shut but pubs seemed busier than usual.
Many people have to work at Christmas.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas, of course.

Boxing Day sales used to be useful when my children were young. DS was born on 9th January and when he was little I used to be able to find really good toys for him at half price or less. Doesn't really work now he's 46!
