Do you really like the song?

I’m another who loves it, wonderful lyrics and a great tune. It was lovely watching the piece on the news about Shane MacGowan’s funeral cortège going through Dublin.

It's the first song on my Christmas playlist.

That guy in the Poges just died, didn’t he ? I don’t mind that song, a bit sentimental late night drunk sort of thing but I don’t think of it as a Christmas Carol, just a folk song.

yes it is a folk song, absolutely brilliant words. Life is not hunky dory for some and the words reflect that. The actual tune is wonderful and very much suits the words. The man was a genius poet

Shane McGowan, was highly intelligent and gifted man but pursued and almost consumed by demons of addiction.
He went to Westminster School, a highly expensive private school, that he could only have got to if he had one a scholarship or bursary. He was later expelled.

The song is OK but the accompanying video was pretty foul.

I love it. It has long been a tradition in my family that Christmas ony starts when you have heard Fairytale of New York. This has been a bit OTT this year of course, but I did hear in on the regular tape at the supermarket yesterday.

I love it, always have. Shane MacGowan was a poet, musician, flawed and lovely human. Rip Shane and what a wonderful ‘send off’ your funeral was. Anyone who hasn’t seen it and likes Fairytale - Google you tube and see the song performed in the Church at his funeral. Glorious

I'm in the 'like it' camp, and always have been.

'Mistletoe and wine' sends me howling from the shops as does Slade's Merry Christmas'. I feel rather scared that I remember these being new!

It featured on Soul Music a few years ago. Without listening to the programme right through, I can't say if this is where I heard the interesting story of how the record was made, but for those who love the song, have a listen to it anyway. Soul Music often makes me cry with it's personal tales of people who have a special connection to that particular piece of music.
