Who else buys themselves a traditional Advent Calendar?

I have treated my self to the Boots beauty advent calendar , with lots of lovely treats. Should be worth over £100. It’s now on offer £45. Well I did have birthday money so I thought why not. It’s not something I would normally spend on myself.

Well, thank you very much Witzend I've just ordered that ^ ^ one for myself, plus another different one for Mr P! (Yes, silly at our age)

No point buying one for my dh, alas. He’s very far from being a grumpy old git but just not into Christmassy things the way I am.

One arrived today, country house scene, looks lovely! Waiting for the dog one.

Asked Mr P if he's like one, said "no" , but I went ahead and ordered them anyway!

A bit of cheer, at small expense, I think we can justify that!

I usually buy the Jaqui Lawson one. The trouble is I forget to open it each day.

Whitewave is that a "real" one, or online? Guessing online, if so a link would be good!

Thanks for reminding me about Jacquie Lawson, WWM2 - I’ve got a sub and had forgotten about it. There’s a good Halloween card I’m sure Gdcs would like.

Yes, I do! I remembered to buy one yesterday. It’s the old fashioned sort with no chocolates etc and I shall enjoy opening it in a few weeks time.

Contemplated buying one for the dgc , but decided to leave that to dd.

I buy a real one from Traidcraft for DGD and a Jacquie Lawson one for me. But I used to love the old-fashioned sparkly ones.

Confused.. what is a traditional advent calendar?

I thought they all had chocolate, or in more recent years, expensive beauty products?

Like the one in my OP, they just have a little numbered flap to open for each day, and there’s a little picture of something Christmassy inside. No chocolate!

Traditionally they had Nativity or snowy village scenes, but are
more varied now.

I love the traditional ones but nowadays it seems to be all about chocolate.

When the DC were little I made one in felt with cross stitch picture pockets to put sweets (or anything) in. It still comes out every year. When the DC left home I put gravy bones in the pockets for the dog. Now she has gone too so I'm not sure if it will be filled with anything this year. It will still be on display though.

I have such lovely memories of the traditional ones of my childhood.

I've just bought advent calendars for all my grandchildren (3 sets) - got lovely round ones that look like floral wreaths sort of. But they didn't come with envelopes (v. annoying!) Have had to spend a fortune (almost more than the calendars themselves) getting huge envelopes so that I can post them! I love the old fashioned sparkly ones - usually get them one of those but this year's ones have some sparkles on them.

We always have a Nativity advent calendar but when my DS was at home we had a fabric pocket one which i filled with a sweet each day, a bible verse of the Christmas story and a job for that person to do, eg empty the dishwasher without being asked! My DS birthday is 4 December so i always made sure he had a piece of Turkish Delight on his special day! Medici cards used to make lovely Advent calendars. We also still have an Advent candle!!

My dear Mum and Stepfather still buy me one. Always a Nativity one, too.
I buy my Grandsons simple ones these days, because they have about 3 others on the go!

We have a chocolate one every year, and the dogs have one each too. Why not! I have the fabric to make one too (bought at a craft fair a few years ago) so I really should do that.....one day.......I also have a wooden house one I bought from Hobbycraft a few years back, something else I need to get done!
