Is tinsel old hat now?

I notice that all the decorated trees in shops, magazines, online etc.are all tinsel free. Also the posh trees seem to be smothered in baubles with no room for tinsel.
What are my fellow gransnetters doing this year?

I like a bit of thin tinsel and there will be some on my tree but I find the thick and lush stuff Too Much.

Buffybee Wed 12-Dec-18 09:30:59

The Tree is beautiful with red and gold baubles, and led micro lights and of course red and gold tinsel, which has to be draped horizontally around the tree.
Tinsel draped criss cross around the tree looks messy.
I'm now fully immersed in Christmasness as I went to a Brass Band Concert last night playing Christmas songs and Carols and everyone sang along.

Yes thanks for mentioning the Christmas message soda pop. Still central for me and many others.

sodapop Wed 12-Dec-18 09:04:24

Exactly Iam64 it's a time for memories and fun not decor. Of course there is the real Christmas message of peace and goodwill to all, lets not lose sight of that.

I've been to two Nativities this year, it was a joy to see that the Angles still have tinsel round their haloes and round their wings.
The dogs have tinsel collars on the Day. I wrap the tinsel around the base of the tree, drape it over mirrors etc. I'm with the lets go overboard on the tack front. We also have tree decorations from the 1950's and stuff made by the children over the years. Who needs style at Christmas?

TwiceAsNice Wed 12-Dec-18 08:21:26

No tinsel on the tree. I drape lights, then shiny strings of little red stars in the same way you would tinsel, then the baubles go on. DGD's did it different sizes of red and gold and a few odd sentimental ones that go on every year. However there is tinsel draped on all the pictures, the standard lamp, and the top of the radiator so love it really

Does anyone else love the smell of tinsel!!! lol
Get me in the decoration aisle of a shop and i gravitate towards it, I just love the smell as it reminds me of christmas as a child when we opened the decoration box each year.My husband laughs at me and says, to other people, ''ignore her she's just getting high on the smell of the tinsel''smile

Giselle Graham had lametta last year. They might not have it this year as I stockpiled! tchblush

Witzend Wed 12-Dec-18 08:02:30

None on ours, but plenty of 'icicles', i.e. lametta, which I had to order online this year, couldn't find any in the shops.

Don't think it's really old hat, lots in the shops, and dd has it on her tree. However the style police will be very sniffy, not that we give a rat's a**e what they think!
Here's ours - covered with assorted everything inc. some we've had for donkeys' years.

EllanVannin Wed 12-Dec-18 07:55:47

Oh yes, tinsel draped over all my pictures/paintings and whatever else is around------standard lamp too. Icicles on my tree and miniature crackers on the branches, balanced.
The place is like a grotto. I couldn't bear the thought of sitting here without a bit of nudging everywhere, it all adds to the ambience of Christmas.
Everything I have is donkeys years old, the only modern item will be a musical lantern that I've ordered from my Avon lady. It lights up and plays carols so I'm made.

My 7 and 5 year old GSs were allowed to decorate the Christmas tree themselves at their home. It is festooned with tinsel and looks a total wreck and I love it. ??

ninathenana Wed 12-Dec-18 07:08:05

No tinsel here for years. The tree when we put it up on Saturday will have white lights, baubles of all shapes and colours which have been collected over the years including a couple that were mum's and one each of babies 1st Christmas that we bought for our DC and strings of red beads. Topped with a fairy/angel confused never have decided what she is.

Mapleleaf Wed 12-Dec-18 06:43:48

Hi kitty - so that’s what it’s called! I’ve got some on my tree in the lounge, red and gold, along with strings of small red beads. Comes out every year, love it! Baubles are different colours and shapes.

kittylester Wed 12-Dec-18 05:47:02

What about lametta? I really love it!

not had tinsel for decades, our tree has white lights and baubles and ornaments collected over the 45 Christmasses we've spent together.I do have a Nativity set that I bought the year we got married and my FIL made a stable for it .It goes up every year and the children and grandchildren have all loved it and played with it.My son used to take the angel off it to school with him when he was 5.Now we have kittens who ignore the tree but are fascinated by the wee people in the stable .
Various lit ornaments around the house, stars in the windows and a singing Santa given to me by my late mother 40 years ago stands by the door...scares the bejesus out of everyone as its sings if theres a noise near it.Love Christmas .

Lynne59 Tue 11-Dec-18 22:27:12

I don't like tinsel. Our tree has baubles and lights on, and we put lights around a large mirror. There are various little Christmassy ornaments about the place too.

Coolgran65 Tue 11-Dec-18 22:25:14

No room for a tree but garlands, wreaths and lights everywhere. Nothing red because it colour clashes with the furnishings......
However - my glass porch is a Christmas Red Delight. Big red Bells, garlands of holly and berries. I've used red tissue paper to make massive red pompoms to hang from the porch ceiling, various sizes starting at 6" up to 20", and hanging at various lengths using red ribbon.

A woman after my own heart trisher. Christmas is all about tacky gaudiness in my book. So it's tinsel on the tree, and draped over pictures, the mirror and anything else that stands still for long enough ???
I can't be doing with all this themed, colour co-ordinated stuff, with wrapping paper to match the tree decorations, which match the room decor. Yawn ?

fiorentina51 Tue 11-Dec-18 22:14:52

I'm with you Trisher. Large tree covered in tat and tinsel.....and a lot of lights. ???

trisher Tue 11-Dec-18 22:07:40

Loads of tinsel for me and none of that designer-sophisticated look. I go for as much tinsel, tat and old decorations as I can. Tacky is the word I think.

Willow500 Tue 11-Dec-18 21:51:52

Oh and some hiding behind this little fellow grin

MissAdventure Tue 11-Dec-18 21:50:43

All the trees look lovely, with or without. smile

Willow500 Tue 11-Dec-18 21:49:15

No tinsel on either of my trees - I do have some wrapped round a tall candle holder and some on my wall unit though.

MissAdventure Tue 11-Dec-18 21:44:33

I like a bit of tinsel.
It covers up the wire between the lights.

Grannybags Tue 11-Dec-18 21:42:38

No tinsel. Tree is covered in lights and red baubles of different sizes. Fairy on the top who is at least 30 years old
