starting Thursday night if you live in West Wales and across the Southern region of England.
Don't like to appear by being part of the Nanny State.
So I am going to suggest a couple of things, yours are welcome.
Make sure your phone is fully charge and if you do have a wireless with rechargeable battery's put it on charge.
Fill your car up with fuel
Get some cash out of the cash machines
and get a couple of extra days shopping.
To the extreme if you have car and live in a low lying location try and get up on a bit higher ground never like see cars during floods being under one foot of water and and written off
Just keep safe.

I think it's best to wear a rain hat and carry on.

As recommended above, one of those concertina ones that tie under the chin. And a plastic mac.

fancythat Thu 22-Oct-26 16:53:58

More like a hard hat..

I dont think we are living in a great area for this storm.

If it gets too loud at night, I will be up.
I cant sleep through noises that are too loud.

JenniRen Thu 22-Oct-26 16:55:46

It's suddenly going rather grey

Personally I am quite excited, now things have been prepared.
As long as there is no loss of life.

We have been preparing beacuse of el nino, for 2 months.

Wind direction is forecast to go in completely opposite direction around 1-2am.

fancythat Thu 22-Oct-26 17:04:26

As it is, wind is in unusual direction for us currently.

At the risk of replaying Monty Python, I remember not being able to get out of the house due to snow, wading through snow to get to college, feed being airlifted in for animals and so on.

Oh and my hair freezing one day.

MawsRosie Thu 22-Oct-26 22:27:14

So far so good 🍁🍂
The grandchildren, Rosie and I walked 20 minutes back from supper at the village pub around 7.30/7.45 tonight after a gloriously sunny perfect Autumn day.
Of course all may change but I’m still not panicking , Mr. Mainwaring!

Regard it as a chance to have a dry run at what you might have to prepare for later in the winter.

It will of course depend where folk live. Rain this morning, sun this afternoon. Rain began again around 6, wind due to pick up in the early hours. Forecasts of 50mph + gusts for the next three days. We do live in an exposed, coastal, windy spot. It’s a regular occurrence, doesn’t mean it’s is danger free though or pleasant to live through. The very large trees along the riverbank are still holding their leaves, thankfully the prevailing wind would take them away from us otherwise if one came down so would our conservatory. Stay safe everyone.

We lost electric for 30 seconds, but other than that, the wind did not seem to whip things off the ground like it usually does.
Plus because DH has weather proofed house better, none of the usual drips and noises.

Exactly that. I don’t suppose the 70,000 in the south west who have lost their power today are regretting preparing for it in advance now.

JamesandJon33 Fri 23-Oct-26 09:08:03

Well Austen is here. Heavy rain and the wind not too bad at the moment.

“Dry run” ?

Unconscious humour?

karmalady Fri 23-Oct-26 09:19:12

South somerset for me and the sun is out, we had a nice amount of much-needed rain earlier. It is a typical october day here

Oh yes let’s replay Monty Python😂
I had to stagger through deep snow with two sheep on my back and then go back to rescue the rest of the flock. My woolly hat completely froze! Our family of ten had to take turns sitting near the fire and we had to share one tin of tomato soup.

greyfur16 I do remember snow, ice and freezing conditions as I expect most on this forum do, and we all survived it without dire warnings from government so I know what you’re saying.Cyber attacks of course are something new but we will survive those as well.Beyond a few necessary things that we all keep in case of power outages it’s a waste of money to go mad with prepper type stuff.

greyfur16 Fri 23-Oct-26 09:29:29

You had a hat?

Oldnproud Fri 23-Oct-26 09:39:08

Yes, every single one of us on this site has definitely, quite literally survived every single thing thrown at us in the past, true enough.

But the many who did not survive those same crises / emergencies /disasters / wars are not exactly able to put their hands up and contradict that statement, are they?

It does make the regular "We all survived ..." comment rather meaningless, IMO.

I love the sound of a storm outside when I’m tucked up with the cats and pup. Perhaps I’m just weird 😁

SpinDriftCoastal Fri 23-Oct-26 09:53:05

Tree down at back of my garden, propped up by other trees. Blowing a hooley outside but no visible damage to structures. Leaves and twigs everywhere even glued to the windows.

jusnoneed Fri 23-Oct-26 09:58:57

We had some much needed rain overnight, then it stopped and brightened a bit. But it has now gone darker and started raining again, and the wind is certainly picking up.
We are in the yellow warning area, just into Dorset and close to Somerset border.

JenniRen Fri 23-Oct-26 10:31:16

Not even my little Christmas tree in a pot blew over which it often does when it's windy. There was a lot of much-needed rain overnight. This morning looked brighter but it's just started raining again.

Same here. Normally, things fly around a lot.

Rather a soggy wet run, but not windy.
