I promptly corrected him with "you mean 'chocolate' NOT 'candy'."

This creeping Americanisation of plain English has gone so far and no further in this family!

Sets my teeth on edge.......

Candy is slang for cocaine.

Amazing what circles people move in.

I dislike the insidious infiltration of Americanisms into our language. That Noah Webster introduced a lot of changes to the English that they speak is fine, but I’m not happy to see it imported here. My grandson comes up with quite a few linguistic Americanisms that I find annoying , and i usually discuss these with him, but I’m sure it doesn’t work the other way round.

Hmmmm......I'll draw a definite - and concrete - line that my Nephew will not be allowed to cross the day I catch him saying "Yo Bro!" or attaching the exclamation "man" to everything.

mollygo part of my general knowledge - probably picked up through popular music, e.g., 'I like Candy' (BowWowWow).

Quite agree. How will you cope with 'trick or treat' another American import?

Actually we di go guising in Scotland as a child. My father was horrified.

I hate the use of store instead of shop.

Candy used to mean boiled sweets in my day that you got weighed out from big jars in my youth - Cough Candy for example

I worked for a multinational. You cannot send chocolate into a country that grows cacao, but you can describe it as candy because the difference is that most customs worldwide treat chocolate as the raw stuff.

And, indeed, if you want to taste US candy, you would never describe it as chocolate!

How about sweets?

We used to sing the song about Coulter’s Candy at primary school. I still know all the words. wink
Thanks for the reminder.
