Do you think I’m wrong to feel suspicious?

A few days ago, my OH and I went to a local large supermarket where we had our flu and Covid jabs. Afterwards, I settled OH in a chair and went to get a few things that I needed, including a couple of ready meals for him in case I reacted badly to the jabs. I turned round with a ready meal in hand to put it in the trolley——-the trolley had gone, complete with my handbag.(Yes, I know it should have been around my shoulder where it usually is but I was so flustered after getting OH in and out of taxis and in and out of clothing that I forgot.)

I shouted “Someone’s taken my handbag” and a member of staff rushed over, asked what was in the trolley and sprinted up and down the nearest aisles but no joy, so she told me to stay where I was while she contacted security. I was in total panic as my bag contained my credit and debit cards, £100, my phone, specs and house keys.

A male staff member joined in the hunt and I stood there in shock for 10-15 minutes, then they returned with a woman pushing my trolley, everything intact, explaining that she’d taken it in error. Still shocked as I was, I was so relieved and the male staff member finished my shopping for me, opened a checkout just for me and OH and I went home.

It was only when I got home that my brain started working. The trolley abandoned by the woman had been standing nearby although I didn’t know this at the time, It was nearly full of beige items, bags of rolls, loaves, pizza bases. I’d registered it in my mind as a “reduced for quick sale’ trolley. My trolley had two brightly coloured shopping bags in it, and just a few punnets of fruit and broccoli, plus my handbag.. What my brain is saying to me is, how can someone push a trolley around a store for 10 minutes or more, adding items , without noticing that it was wildly different from her own.

Do you think that I’m being oversuspicious or would the hairs at the back of your neck be standing on end?

By the way, I am so grateful to the shop staff who were so kind and efficient. They even went over to my OH, who has a degree of dementia, to reassure him that I would soon be back.

Esmay She sounds very weird! Why on earth would anyone push a wheelchair with someone she didn't know in it, especially if they were dozing?!

I agree with others if her intentions were bad she would have taken you handbag and got out not wandered around the store, she may have memory problems and got confused about was in her basket , some people are just scatty.

Agree. The other lady could be in the early stages of dementia for all anyone knows.

Very scary whatever. There is nothing worse than contemplating someone having all your credit cards etc and the fuss and upheaval involved with reporting it to banks, police etc. We lost a credit card recently and it was a friggin nightmare and you have to wait days for replacements

My wife has just changed her handbag to a small bag, that goes round her neck to hold phone, cash and credit cards. Even the car now needs the phone connected to drive it

You see absent minded people all the time walking off with the wrong trolley Im sure is common, walking off with the wrong wheelchair is a surprise, I hope it doesn't happen too regularly.

I think she made a genuine mistake. Even though her shopping was hugely ‘different’ to your own she could have been distracted by personal circumstances, just like you were, and zoned out temporarily.
Lesson learned……you got your bag back! Keep it with you in future.

Do you think if I left my dh in his wheelchair in tescos by the dairy aisle somebody might wheel him off?
Just for a few hours mind, im sure he would be dropped back quickly, he woke up in a foul mood this morning, ...Just jesting

meddijess

I think that you ought to have your locks changed - just to be on the safe side!

Huge, huge, huge over reaction, Meddijess totally unnecessary and really quite daft Do you think the woman had a key copying machine in her handbag ? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Absentmindedly doing things is so easily done I used to cycle everywhere, one day I cycled to town, locked my bike up, did my shopping, and walked all the way home with heavy bags. Only when I got home did I realise I’d left my cycle sitting in town. At least it wasn’t a baby
It was obviously an innocent mistake, if the woman had wanted your stuff she’d have put the bag round her neck and legged it.

When I first had a shopping trolly for my birthday, I was so proud of it, off to the supermarket on its maiden voyage, half way round, I realised I didn’t have my trolly which had all my worldly goods in it. I was so unused to pulling one around I d stopped to look at something and bingo wandered off. So I was running around the supermarket like a scolded cat and there it was sitting waiting for me by the vegi stand.

"At least it wasn’t a baby" I did that many, many years back, the time when we had to leave our babies outside shops! who can recall those days? well I left my baby, in its pram outside the shop, walked home, can`t recall exactly how long it too me to realise, fortunately I didn`t live too far, so hopefully, I really can`t remember, I rushed back!

"It was obviously an innocent mistake, if the woman had wanted your stuff she’d have put the bag round her neck and legged it."

exactly, but I can accept that it is a shock, and our brains can panic and seize up! a good lesson for us all, to slow down and think...

I too think the woman was innocent. A thief would have legged it with the bag asap.
I had my purse stolen in Dorothy Perkins many years ago . It was a shoulder bag with a popper to close it. So easy for a pickpocket to slip a hand in.
I now always use a crossbody bag and I’ve got a travellon bag with clips on the zips to secure them . I use it on city breaks and when I’m in London .
It amazes me that people put their phone in their back pockets when travelling. Once on the tube I alerted a male tourist that his phone in his back pocket wasn’t a good idea.
