Do You Have Any Strange Memories?

I don't think I am unusual in having quite a few random memories that are quite humdrum, do not involve anything momentous but nevertheless are very vivid.

For instance; It was early January and I was waiting outside a shop with my brother, my tiny baby sister was in her large black pram. A lady came up and "What a lovely Christmas present for you both, a beautiful baby." I remember exchanging looks with my brother.

I vividly remember an indoor break at school when the weather was so bad that we were allowed to stay in. We were in the school assembly hall and we were dancing to "Please Please Me" by the Beatles. The record was on repeat and we spent most of the break dancing to it.

I am sure there is a scientific explanation for why we sometimes remember random things but other more momentous occasions are totally forgotten.

I was around 4, and a bridesmaid for my uncles wedding. I remember being most disappointed that my bouquet was made with crepe paper roses covered in wax. I heard later that it was thought that I would pick it real ones! Of course I did pick at them but only because I was curious as to what they were! Even now I resent being told off, of course I wouldn't have picked at real flowers because I knew what they were!

I remember the snow piled up either side of the pavement as I walked with my mother to go and see one of her friends. I dropped some of my Smarties into the snow - I can picture the colours running into it even now. This would've been early 1963 during the big freeze. Funny though: I don't remember being cold 🤷

I can vividly remember being in my pink cot. I must have been put down for an afternoon nap and getting bored. I had a hairgrip in my hair which I took out and I started to scratch the motif of a little puppy in a garden with cobble stones, off the inside end of my cot. I must have done this on several occasions. I later learned my mother had been very puzzled for ages about how I was doing it. Anyway on this occasion I was merrily scratching away at the motif when I suddenly became aware of being watched. It was my mother peeping around the bedroom door. I remember her coming forward and saying 'So that's how you are doing it!'

I remember being in my infant class one day , the sky went very dark and it seemed like nighttime. Our stupid teacher, Miss George, told us that it was night and our mums had forgot to pick us up so we would have to stay in school overnight. Obviously she had meant it as a joke but me and several other girls started crying and she had to calm us down .
I also remember being assaulted by a bad man at a similar age but that’s enough about that x x

I have a similar memory of being in infants when it went as dark as night (in my memory, anyway) one afternoon in early summer.
We were all sitting on the floor at the time, having a story read to us, when the teacher had to ask a child to switch on the light. Luckily, our teacher (Mrs Brown) didnt make a big thing of it, but I still remember feeling very uneasy when I realised just how dark it was and how it wasn't 'normal'.

My son remembers going to the hospital to visit me and his new baby brother the day after the birth. Apparently, he had a push along toy with him, and a nurse said that he couldnt take it in, but she kindly showed him where he could 'park' it. It was just three days after his second birthday.

I clearly remember my sister telling me to show her friend how I could jump down the stairs. I was two and she was nine years older than me.?Apparently I was only saved from injury by the fact that I was wearing a thick siren suit. She and her friend once also threw me in a pit of stinging nettles! I was born the year the war ended and I guess she’d had our mum all to herself until I came along so was extremely jealous of me. This continued throughout our lives.
