I was thinking the other day about the first time I ever went in a Supermarket. As a child, I'd been brought up using only local and corner shops,my Mother used the old co op but eventually it acquired new premises and morphed into a supermarket. I can remember staring at all these goods set out, shelf after shelf of them, no one to ask to serve you these items, having to put it in your basket before you'd handed any money over.It felt astonishing and now we think nothing of it.When I think back now it had VERY limited stock but it was the most ever food I had seen on display .It surely must have led to a certain amount of overbuying as with the local shops you'd probably go with a list, buy exactly what was on it, unless the shopkeeper told you of his special offer or something 'New in' !
Mother put on child abuse register for letting her 5 year old go for a walk!
