I’m married to an Irishman. He comes from Rush, just outside Dublin.

He and his family always state that they are from Southern Ireland.

I completely understand what you’re saying about how the entire island of Ireland is geographically split.

I am surprised to hear that Miriam Margoyles was funny and entertaining.
In The Real Marigold Hotel, where celebs were being themselves, not acting, she was selfish and unpleasant. Since then, when I have seen her, it has only reinforced my negative view of her.
Her recent racism towards Andi Peters was unacceptable.

Ed Byrne is from Swords.
My husband's family are from Skerries.
Most live there

If asked if he is from the north or south of Ireland, he says he's from the East, just to make people aware.

I listened to the Andi Peters debacle and yes Miriam was out of line which she later realised and apologised for. And Andi Peters has every right to feel badly about it. But I very much doubt there was an underlying prejudice there, Miriam’s lack of a filter is well known.
Though am by no means seeking to dismiss Peter’s feelings on the matter.

Miriam was wrong and it was hurtful and embarrassing for Andi Peters.

She did apologise. That acknowledged she was wrong, but it doesn’t in any way excuse her comments.

However, it did not take away from my husbands, our two friends, nor my enjoyment of her show.

The theatre was packed. At two points, one single person and another couple walked out.

There was their right and if they felt in any way insulted, upset or angry at her comments, this was the right thing for them to do.

I do hope they left their “free” book behind

She was a very fine actress. Now she is vile. How on earth some of her "anecdotes" are amusing is beyond me.

I've always admired most aspects of Miriam. But obviously her outspokenness can be very upsetting and she should have realised this by now. However, I don't think she is racist. I think she is always curious about people and their backgrounds and can be somewhat naïve at times in the way she asks questions.

I don't mind Miriam, she is crude and vulgar sometimes but she does not offend me.

I have never found crude and vulgar ‘comedians’ the slightest bit funny and this awful woman is one of the worst examples.

Those who need to resort to vulgarity to get a laugh are not true comedians, in my opinion anyway.

But then we are all different as this thread has shown.

DH and I were at a Harvester restaurant several years ago.

The table behind us had 5 young lads on it, their language was full of F’s and C’s , then came what they were going to do with their girlfriends

Much to DH’s dismay I turned round, clapped them and said no doubt your parents and grandparents are proud of you, your language and morals.

They were as quiet as church mice for the rest of their meal…

Miriam Margoyles has never offended me in the way those young males did…

No such thing as a 'true comedian'. Different people find different things funny.

That’s why I said in my opinion she’s not funny as I realise there are some people who like her particular brand of humour.
