This has gone down in history stated by the then Queen Elizabeth later the Queen mother as showing how brave they were staying on in Buckinham Palace .
I have been reading a book about the East End in wartime and was astonished to read that she was generally hated there . The locals saw her and the king visiting bombed out homes and all they themselves had suffered was some damage to a wall . They thought she was turning up with new fur coats on and had no idea of the loss these people had had .
I always knew she had an iron will behind her sweet smile but this I did not know .
