Good Morning Tuesday 18th August 2026
(49 Posts)Is anyone else awake? 6 months since losing my husband of 60 years and I’m having a difficult night.
I’d love to join in the Gransnet chats that come on my email every day but by the time I get them, you’ve almost all finished chatting. I’m not sure how to use this gransnet thing. 😊
Good morning, it’s very dark and cool here in south Glos, still no sign of rain despite the forecast vaguely suggesting drizzle somewhere, sometime 🙄
I do feel for you mernice, the wee small hours are the worst for being lonely, aren’t they?
Despite DH saying he’s watered my posts every day most of them are looking very sad and desiccated; I’m really upset because I don’t expect him to do much. I wish now I’d paid someone to come in and do it.
I went to the doctor, I’m on antibiotics so just as well I did. She’s told me to rest more, honestly I am doing very little but obviously not little enough! It’s difficult when you’re used to having to do everything.
Anyway, I’ll sit and do more stitching today, I also have a heap of books to read but my concentration is missing!
Chicken and salad for dinner, cba to cook.
I think it’s meant to be cooler today, hopefully it will stay that way for a while.
Take care x

Good morning from a dry, dawning Bristol.
mernice, early days; it’s normal to still find life hard. Are you getting counselling? Some people find it helpful.
Yesterday went well. My friend picked me and two others up to go to the Cadbury garden centre; it was only about 35 minutes to get there and the air was clear after about 1/2 hour of extremely light drizzle earlier.
The garden centre itself is more of a mini-mall, well set up and one pays only when exiting. The plant area is well organised and the plants looking good, obviously watered regularly.it was busy but not heaving and what children were there were very well behaved.
We met the rest of the group for coffee then wandered around.
Met again for lunch where my friend and I were having hysterics over the pronunciation of “quinoa”. She is profoundly deaf and couldn’t understand me. Eventually I wrote”kin-waah” on a napkin. She said it was much more useful than lip reading…. We then proceeded to “vinegrette”, etc. it’s hard trying to think how to split words into manageable pronunciation.
I came home exhausted for som3 reason, slept for an hour, sat fo4 the rest of the day went to bed very early, where I slept until now!
Today, Tesco with a different friend taking me. The podiatrist is also coming, with a resident joining me for his feet.
Re. Management company; we are meeting our MP in a fortnight; then probably going to the national press after that…
Probably everyone else is, like me, feeling better in the more temperate weather - just need rain!
Have a good day,Carpe diem 🦩🦩🦩🦩
r&l, I’m glad you have seen the doctor and been given antibiotics. please listen to your doctor. Do even less “nothing”….
Good morning from s somerset, cooler and perhaps a smidgen of rain later
Condolences Mernice
At last, we have cooler weather and I have just been out and taken all my sun shading down, I sowed my chantanay carrot seeds yesterday and am now hoping for perfect growing weather, albeit with shorter days
Yesterday was craft group and we did not get much done, it was wonderful, a smaller group of women at their best, funny, kind, empathetic. We overstayed our time and came out buzzy and uplifted
The workload on me is reducing, it always does towards autumn. I still need to lubricate the window and door hinges etc but I will get that moment if I bring the silicone spray into the house, I will do it at some point
I sat and wrote out my food plan for my vegans, everyone will be having the vegan buffet too, I am past catering for all and sundry. I still have a few days to get the sleeping accommodation ready but tbf the house is clean and tidy enough. I don`t feel overwhelmed anymore which is the main thing
I am pretty well up to date now so am going to have a nice peaceful rest day.
Roses I was hoping you would get the push from your doc, to rest more, you were up and at it too quickly
Good Morning, Michael and all GNs. It’s cool and, dare I say it, damp, in South Yorkshire. After teasing us all day yesterday and not coming up with the goods, it seems we have finally seen some rain.
Yesterday I had an early appointment with my lovely chiropractor and then I came home to do some batch cooking for the freezer.
Today, DD is coming at some point after dropping off SiL at a local hospital to have day surgery on his hand. It’s only ten minutes from here so she will hang out with me until it’s time to pick him up again I expect as he won’t be able to drive for a while. If this hadn’t been happening I would have gone into town today but she’ll be glad of the company I know.
Mernice, I’m sorry you’re struggling. You won’t be the only one on here. You’ll get used to Gransnet and especially Mick’s Good Morning thread, where we all basically wish each other good morning and talk about our plans for the day - even if we don’t have any plans for the day to speak of it’s nice to know what everyone else is up to!
Have the best day you can, folks.
Good morning from Malta where it’s is sunny and the high is forecast to be a more manageable 35°C.
Yesterday morning was frustrating as I was anxiously awaiting a call from my UK bank (all above board Marydoll. It’s because I live abroad). I ended up having to call them to say I hadn’t received the call despite an email reminding me about it, I was upset about it and told them so which elicited an apology and a promise that someone would call later.
I then got on with cleaning the front steps which were, like half the island, black with ash from the recent eruptions from Mount Etna. There have been a lot of flight delays and cancellations due to the ash.
Around 2pm DD3 brought DGS1 who had told her ‘I want to go to Nana’s on my own’. Needless to say, I was overjoyed to see him and we had a lovely afternoon together which was interrupted by the call from the bank which was from a young lady wth such a thick accent I had trouble understanding her, but eventually it was sorted.
DD3 arrived at 6pm with DGS2 and they stayed until 8pm telling me about their lovely time in Gozo. The boys are both as brown as berries from being in the pool all day, bless them. I missed them.
Milo and the canary have gone home so today I have a long list of things to do starting with stripping the bed, ironing, cleaning and a walk to the bakery for bread.
RosesandLilac I’m glad you saw the doctor. Please follow instructions to rest more. I don’t need any encouragement to do very little! I think I was a sloth in a former life!😂
Take care all and I hope your day is a good one.☀️
Good morning from Sheffield
My back hurts today. A combination of a lot of walking also sitting on a coach for hours . I shall take it easy today. I’ll do some yoga, see if that loosens it up a bit
It’s bring and share at my WI this evening. I am taking sausage rolls. As I’m gluten free it’s a bit of a non event for me as the food everyone brings contains gluten. There is cheese and salad. I shall take a small gf quiche. I find these evenings quite difficult, people don’t get it and think I’m fussy. I have to go as my poorly sister in law isn’t able to go and she normally organises the raffle. She has asked me to do it so I have to go.
Take care everyone
Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently 16° and damp, although not actually raining. Mernice welcome to Mick's thread which is a place of peace. Rosesandlilac I'm glad you contacted your doctor. Take their advice to do even less! GrandMattie your pronunciation lesson made me laugh!
Yesterday I dropped off the boys at school. Dgs2 did not want to go and I basically had to drag him in but a lovely teacher came and got him and he trotted off quite happily. Then home where I made lentil soup, peanut butter cookies and Nutella cookies. Then I had a lie down, if not an actual nap. I picked up the boys and chatted to his teacher who said he's fine in the class. She praised his manners and sharing. I also chatted to dgs1's teacher who said he is very very bright. He is also a Duracell bunny(thinking of Marydoll's wee one) and can't sit still! The boys played at my house until they were picked up by their parents.
Today I will bring the boys to my house for breakfast. Dgs1 eats his body weight in watermelon! Then the school run. Hopefully dgs2 won't be too upset as it bothers dgs1 too. Then home to do the blooming ironing! I had a very disturbed night so I might have a nap. Then back to school for the boys, more shenanigans at grandma's house before I take them home. Dinner will be quiche and salad. Enjoy your day all.
Good morning from a cooler, drizzly Cornwall. How kind you were about my grandson's plight yesterday. Thank you. He's fine, no lasting effects, and his dad and my nephews had great fun using AI to create a poster for him, see pic.
I found two Moroccan Mint plants in a shop yesterday. It's my favourite mint by far, with a really lovely scent but it's not easy to find so I'm chuffed. The lady who served me said that mint plants remind her of chemotherapy because she was always given mint tea after a session.
The doctor I saw yesterday, a locum who was wearing shorts and a tee shirt and looking wonderfully relaxed, dealt very thoroughly with me and has booked an asthma review plus heart tests to find out why I'm breathless. I'm so well looked after by our excellent surgery.
I finished making a longish denim waistcoat yesterday, created from two tops, the front leg pieces of a pair of jeans and lace from a dress, mostly charity shop purchases. It's been a right old fiddle but at least I got there in the end.
Today I must return my build-up of library books and potter on my patio with my new plants.
Good morning from a grey Essex coast. No sun but still warm.
DH and a friend travelled up to Harwich yesterday by boat. They are away for a few days.
I have lots of club admin to do plus housework which has been neglected during the hot weather.
I fell over on Saturday and landed on my right wrist. It's very swollen and painful but I don't think it's broken.
Being right handed it's hard to write.
Have a good day everyone xx
Good Morning everyone from the central south coast. We have a thick cloud cover and it feels as if we may see some rain. Fingers crossed.
Welcome Mernice to this gentle and kind thread. Just post what you might say chatting to a neighbour in passing. Or even just say Good Morning! We are a supportive bunch on here and you will soon feel part of it.
DH and I both have an early appointment at the surgery . He has a blood test at 9.02 and I have my annual asthma check at 9.10am so we have a little outing together. Watch it rain on us! ( The timings are so precise but never adhered to!)
My Isle of Man niece is still sorting through boxes of "stuff"from clearing my big brother's flat and has found postcards I sent from our foreign travels to my parents (her Grandparents). She is going to save them and send them to me along with anything else of interest to me that she comes across. I shall send her some flowers to thank her for all her efforts and kindness in this very difficult few months.
I too had a chuckle at your pronunciation lesson GM but was impressed that it helped your friend so easily!
Hope the day is a good one for all of us especially those with struggles or worries of any kind.
Good morning from Shropshire.Another cooler start.
Yesterday’s trip to town wasn’t very successful although we had a good lunch out.We came home and ordered what we needed online. We did try to support local businesses🤷♀️I was able to get a pack of 90 of the supplements I take for the same price Boots were charging for 30.
Today is our stretch and balance class followed by the weekly Sainsbury’s shop.
I love the poster Marzipan.I warned both my daughters about the weever fish as they both spend a lot of time at the beach during the summer.I am glad your grandson has no lasting effects.
Have a good day everyone 🌻🦩
'I fell over on Saturday and landed on my right wrist. It's very swollen and painful but I don't think it's broken.'
Sar53 my friend did exactly the same recently and said exactly what you said but eventually had an x-ray because it was uncomfortable. She had broken a bone in her hand. Maybe get it checked?
Good morning everyone from mid Essex. It’s grey, cool and breezy. I had to close my bedroom windows in the night as it was so noisy with the wind blowing across them. A small puddle on the garden table this morning, so we obviously had a shower in the night.
I spent yesterday sorting out the washing and putting away the stuff I’d taken to DD1’s. I miss the dog!
I’ll go for a walk this morning, then I have a food delivery. The gardener is coming this afternoon and I’ll see my dementia friend and leave the gardener to clear the dead leaves etc.
mernice early days for you. This is a lovely thread, but if you are too late to post on here, you could try soop’s kitchen. It’s another kind and comfortable thread and people post all afternoon and late into the evening.
rosesandlilac good you have antibiotics, but you really must rest more - no clearing out of cupboards or watering of plants. Very frustrating for you, but unfortunately necessary.
marzipan I love the poster and am pleased your DGS has recovered from his sting.
I hope all those who are feeling poorly today find some relief.
Have the best day you can everyone.
Good morning from a cloudy S E Essex, what a change from the constant blue sky, I know the ground needs the rain, but it would be perfect if it rained over night and we kept the blue sky during the day.
I shall go to Pilates this morning, and potter the rest of the day.
mernice sending my condolences 💐
Good morning from an overcast Torbay with a welcome breeze.
Welcome to mernice!
Brilliant poster, Marzipan21!
Take good care of yourself, RosesandLilac and relax more.
Last night I was sitting in the Green Room as my part in the play was finished. I was just waiting to go on for the bow. As usual, we had opened up all the back doors to get cool air through. Suddenly a dog wandered into the wings! Luckily, it was quickly intercepted by the props lady and helped to leave!
Our audience was rather subdued and only reacted to very obvious visual humour rather than any of the satirical exchanges. It never ceases to amaze me how much audiences can vary in their reactions to performances.
Have a good day, everyone, whatever you're up to!
Good morning all from a cool North Leicestershire. We had heavy rain overnight - for abiut 5 minutes.
We had a lovely day with DGD1 yesterday. Lunch was lovely and she didn't stop talking the whole time. She is choosing Universities at the moment so we got a complete run down of all the pros and cons of all her options. Manchester seems favourite. She has her driving test on Thursday but we aren't supposed to know.
Today we are taking DGS5 (Wolfie) to the Space Centre. These school holidays are expensive and tiring. But fun and lovely too.
Mernice, welcome. You can log on to GN without waiting for the email and join any threads
Have the best day possibke, everyone.
Good morning from W Kent where we have had rain overnight. After the cleaner left yesterday DH and I decided to go to our favourite garden and wander about very pleasant as it wasn’t quite as hot
Today I will have a cuppa with my friend who had a foot op, she is still stuck indoors and getting a bit fed up
Roses more resting please
Best wishes to all
Good morning from overcast Leicestershire.
I think it may have rained over night!
Yesterday I changed the beds and my back allowed me to hang the washing out - the first time in ages!
Today we are going to the local pub for coffee with friends.
Welcome Mernice.
Wishing everyone the best day possible.
Morning all from West Oxfordshire. The forecast was for rain but there has been no sign of it.
I’m seeing friends afternoon. One of our group was widowed just before Christmas and it would have been his birthday today. She said she would bake a cake to celebrate with us all.
I think OH is doing things with his bees. At some point I will help him put the latest batch of honey into about 40 jars.
I’m hoping the fabric I ordered will be delivered soon so I can get on with my enormous quilt.
Have a good day everyone. R&L - the word ‘rest’ may not be in your vocabulary, but you really need to!
Good morning Mick and everyone from bright Carlisle where we have had showers, some heavy, on and off.
Welcome mernice and condolences, it's a hard road in these early days. Just join in here when you can.
Yesterday I did a load of laundry, ran the vac around and then went into town...and it was still early!
I was annoyed when arriving at my usual, handy car park to find it closed off for resurfacing. Why not a warning notice before we all drove down there...all having to reverse and go elsewhere. Which for me meant a longer walk to the shops with my painful leg.
Did all my errands and collected my prescription then went home for late morning coffee through yet more roadworks. Carlisle is riddled with them at the moment.
In the afternoon, it was admin and reading my book which I have now finished. It was quite a good tale, in fact excellent for what was a 40p brand new book!
Today, a bit of bathroom cleaning and organising more holiday arrangements. I'm also tempted to get into the garden in spite of my leg muscle as there's suddenly lots to do...but not watering thank goodness.
I'm sorry about your pots R&L but glad you have been officially told to rest more. Best wishes!
And a pleasant day to all of you.
