Craig and Lindsay Foreman end their hunger strike in prison in Iran.

I do hope that they fully recover, as assuming that they have eaten nothing for 90 days, then their bodies will be in full starvation mode and eating itself, including major organs.

I feel very , very sorry for these people but also am absolutely astonished that they entered Iran at this time going against FO guidance and the pleas of their own loved ones.
Had they never read about Nazarin Zaghari-Radcliffe's detention effectively as a political hostage ?
Now they are horrendously ill as well as everything else.
Straight question. Did the hunger strike wrestle any concessions from the Iranians ? Why did they abandon it apart from the absolutely b**** obvious reason ?

Couple of twits and unfortunately no one will really know or care what they do. First I’ve heard of them.

I do feel sorry for this couple and their family. They may have been stupid to enter a country that is known to be dangerous for western passport holders but they do not deserve to be imprisoned and suffer the sadistic nature of the Iranian justice system.

I have no idea what they were hoping to achieve with this hunger strike but the Iranian government was highly unlikely to take any notice of them, let alone feel sympathy.

Surely it’s in this couple’s best interest to try to remain as healthy as possible, not subject their bodies to this pointless starvation.

I can’t imagine how their families must feel and the utter foolishness of their actions. I’m not saying they deserve imprisonment but why on earth did they go?

I think they are very unlikely to return home to the UK any time soon. Whatever possessed them we will never know. The government will do the bare minimum as we all know. A very sad affair.

According to the BBC, they consumed just milk, honey, salt and water for the length of the hunger strikes, so not completely without some nourishment.

Craig Foreman's sentence was increased by two years because he communicated with the media and they still have the rest of their sentences to complete.

Only they know what they were hoping to achieve by going there in the first place despite advice to the contrary and by this hunger strike. They are naïve to put it mildly.

I wonder if the government could do a swap? I’m sure there are Iranians over here who could be swapped with this couple.

If there are Iranians in support of the regime in prison over here who are not British nationals then that might work, am no expert here, but just run of the mill Iranian criminals in jail over here who are not supportive of the regime would probably be executed if returned to Iran.

They did a very foolish thing and are paying for it.The government knows they are no threat but it is a cruel regime and doing it because they can. I feel sorry for the couple and their families. and do hope they will be released soon.

I'm sorry for them, but anyone who ignores Foreign Office advice does so at their peril. It was hard enough to get Nazarene Ratcliffe out and she was there for legitimate reasons They must have known it's not a country anyone can roll up to and do a personal tour on their way through to the next place. . Our next door neighbours in our old house were Iranian. The mother went back and we really used to worry about the daughter when she went to visit her.

It's an incredibly cruel and harsh regime. There was a thread over on MN recently where some brave teenager gave brief sanctuary to individuals on the run and they hanged him. 19 years old, his parents only child. That really, really upset me. Not an isolated incident by any means.

I am not no one and I care about them from a purely humanitarian point of view. I agree that what they did was foolish but that really is not the point. I don't think I am by any means alone in caring what happens to them.

This is what I can’t understand. The Nazanin case was always in the news, with her British husband fighting tirelessly to get her released, and Nazanin is an Iranian woman, who had gone home with her small child to visit her elderly parents.
She ended up in prison for years on some trumped up charge, so why didn’t this couple bear that in mind when they were planning their route and deciding which countries to visit?

I wondered if they both were set on going there or if one did and the other went along with it. Whatever, a huge error of judgment and they’re paying for it now. Very sad.

As far as I remember, they were travelling through Iran but also talking to local people about what their lives were like there.
Not espionage but rather foolhardy under the circumstances.
It would be a relief if they are released but I feel more sorry for their family.

Nazanin's case was different, I felt desperately sorry for her and prayed for her release.
