I can't stand 'picky bits'! This seems to be advertised in all supermarkets at the moment.

Picky bits in my family is known as a surprise on a plate!

I love that, I’m going to use it!

TheWeirdoAgain60 Thu 02-Jul-26 08:52:43

''Chowing down'' instead of eating.

''Holibobs'' instead of Holidays.

''Xmas'' and ''Crimbo'' instead of Christmas - this is coming from me, an atheist!

''Icky tummy'' instead of bad stomach.

''Kibble'' as in pet food. I call it nibbles.

''Vacay'' and ''stacation''.

When someone calls me ''young lady'' no matter what my age, I find it SO condescending and patronising!

''Wanna'' and ''gonna'' instead of want to and going to.

My family all said picky bits before it was thing and still do.
My H and my parents also died, my friend rang me on Saturday to tell me a mutual friend had passed away, I was tempted to ask if she had died but it seemed harsh so I kept it back.

Nannee49 Thu 02-Jul-26 11:15:50

Passed or passed away has been in use for over 650 years to denote death as passing from one state to another. (The Lay Folks Mass Book in Middle English)

Perfectly legitimate, non euphemistic, grammatical term whether you like it or not.

👏👏👏

Whenever we have this thread, which i love, I always contribute 'haitch'. I don't think anything makes my blood boil as much.

Foxglove77 Thu 02-Jul-26 14:36:46

I hate the word grisle! If I'm watching a sad film DS will look at me and say "you're not grisling are you?". Hate it, reminds me of gristle you find in meat.

Foxglove77 Thu 02-Jul-26 14:38:38

Maybe it's grizzle i mean.

bebe2 Thu 02-Jul-26 14:45:55

Moist. Can't bear it!

Romola Thu 02-Jul-26 14:53:46

Lounge except in an hotel

Moii Thu 02-Jul-26 15:42:33

'Hubby' I'm sure it's fairly new unless it's only just started bugging me and 'give your head a wobble'

62Granny Thu 02-Jul-26 15:48:42

Another vote against "picky bits" 😵
Also not a word but videos were people WAG their fingers really gets my goat.
The term "influencers" 🤷

Siptree Thu 02-Jul-26 15:51:52

Oh dear, I didn't find more than a few amongst all the suggestion that don't really bother me. Most I am a nodding away thinking 'Yes!!! smile

jakuss Thu 02-Jul-26 16:07:15

Partner, you're not in business, its either hubby/ wife, boyfriend / girlfriend, or even mistress

jakuss Thu 02-Jul-26 16:12:45

It's grizzling not gristleing, grizzling, crying in the dictionary

Greciangirl Thu 02-Jul-26 16:19:46

Hun and Babe.

Hate being called those names.

My daughter s generation use these all the time.

cc Thu 02-Jul-26 16:28:38

I hate "bless" too, usually said as "bl e e e ss" with elongated e. Partner is irritating to me too, I'm married, to me it means more.
I don't mind "picky bits" though I'm not so keen on nibbles - I know it is common parlance now and has been for years.
And "haitch", though my adopted grandchildren do say it and I have to bite my tongue....

Erin2910 Thu 02-Jul-26 16:34:40

I hate Hey-ho and back in the day

Kitty55 Thu 02-Jul-26 16:36:10

I don’t like the word cute and I’m tired of listening to a variety of people calling everything amazing or amaz.

Lesley60 Thu 02-Jul-26 16:36:36

I once knew someone who used to say will you do me a flavour instead of favour, she thought this was hysterical but it used to really get on my nerves she sounded so childish.

Bukkie Thu 02-Jul-26 16:37:56

I know it's a regional thing but my teeth are on edge when someone calls a scone (rhymes with cone) as a scon (rhymes with gone) I always correct them but then hate myself for doing it.

I dislike the phrase picky bits . It feels like they are infantilising us .
It’s either a buffet , picnic or cold cuts .

Wheniwasyourage Thu 02-Jul-26 17:03:57

Sorry, Bukkie, I feel much the same as you if I hear someone call a scone (gone) as scone (cone)!

Haitch

If you think that, you've got another THING coming - surely it must be THINK, or it makes no sense!
