I can't stand 'picky bits'! This seems to be advertised in all supermarkets at the moment.

👏👏👏

Passed or passed away has been in use for over 650 years to denote death as passing from one state to another. (The Lay Folks Mass Book in Middle English)

Perfectly legitimate, non euphemistic, grammatical term whether you like it or not.

My family all said picky bits before it was thing and still do.
My H and my parents also died, my friend rang me on Saturday to tell me a mutual friend had passed away, I was tempted to ask if she had died but it seemed harsh so I kept it back.

''Chowing down'' instead of eating.

''Holibobs'' instead of Holidays.

''Xmas'' and ''Crimbo'' instead of Christmas - this is coming from me, an atheist!

''Icky tummy'' instead of bad stomach.

''Kibble'' as in pet food. I call it nibbles.

''Vacay'' and ''stacation''.

When someone calls me ''young lady'' no matter what my age, I find it SO condescending and patronising!

''Wanna'' and ''gonna'' instead of want to and going to.

Picky bits in my family is known as a surprise on a plate!

I love that, I’m going to use it!

JamesandJon33 Thu 02-Jul-26 08:23:10

Hollibobs and Vaycay. Just no!!

... and "Crimbo" for Christmas.

I also dislike the word "staycation" - it sounds so contrived.

Since I’ve just seen it elsewhere, Brits writing ‘cozy’! Honestly makes me way to slap them.

Ditto ‘ass’ when they mean ARSE!
When I’m a dictator all such offenders will be thrown into a rat infested dungeon for a week. 😈

Well I’m also going to be a dictator. Maybe we could join forces as I’m fully in favour of your proposed punishment. smile

There seems to be a trend of addressing people as "lovely" now. I find it a bit irritatingl.

I also don't like the use of the words passed and passed away instead of died.

I should think interspersing every few words with "like" annoys a lot of people. I suppose in the past people "ummed" instead.

Youngerthanspringtime Wed 01-Jul-26 21:00:32

I wouldn't let things like that bother me one little bit!

Bellanonna Wed 01-Jul-26 20:59:36

Agree with comment about “passed” and “passed away”. Hate it.

MissAdventure Wed 01-Jul-26 20:57:27

Going on a journey, instead of being ill.
End of!

mumski Wed 01-Jul-26 20:55:08

'HUBBY' . makes me absolutely cringe.

Doodledog Wed 01-Jul-26 20:43:55

‘Uni’ for ‘university’ makes me cringe’.

‘Why, oh why?’ is so overblown and dramatic.

Any sentence that ends with ‘Not’ to contradict what has been said. Why not just say what you mean, instead of saying what you don’t mean and contradicting yourself ungrammatically?

I’m with you on both . Holibobs grinds my teeth

Broken.
People are no longer sad, upset, miserable or even devastated.
They are now always 'broken'

Deedaa Wed 01-Jul-26 19:54:44

My mother in law used to talk about panties when she meant her very large white knickers. I just thought it was horribly twee. Picky Bits type meals have always been called buffets in our house. My late husband didn't pass or pass away - he died, and he would have been the first to say so.

But I do rather like the idea of all my cats making their way across a rainbow bridge, especially if they were going to wait for me.

I don't like 'merch', as an abbreviation of merchandise.
But I will get used to other, as I have with so many other words over the years.

How did i miss that typo? It should say that I will get used to 'it', not 'other'!

MissAdventure Wed 01-Jul-26 19:08:32

Simples!

I hate the word ‘like’ used regularly in conversation, was on the train the other day and a young woman said something akin to this to whoever was unfortunate enough to be on the other end of her telephone conversation. ‘I like said to her, you know, like, what are saying?’
I also hate convo instead of conversation and ‘laters’ instead of goodbye.
