I finally got dh to get it out of the loft. It’s a big one, and pretty noisy, which is why we hadn’t got it out before, but, oh the difference!
Needless to say, it’s absolutely sweltering here again today….

Electrical cut again third time today.

No one hasn’t mentioned what I think is a very best fan almost silent… Meaco. Bliss!

I read a which report recently which recommended the Meaco fans

We bought a portable aircon unit this week and it’s been good enough to bring down the temperature to a bearable level. It’s a bit noisy and the tube has to go out of a window of course.

Meaco has indeed been mentioned previously. It absolutely excellent. Best fan ever.

Some of you may find this useful...
These cooling products/fans all have the "Quiet mark"

I wish we had a small courtyard! A house we looked at had one off the kitchen, surrounded by walls on all sides. So shady. I hate being indoors so much.

That’s exactly what we’ve got, a lovely large courtyard surrounded by walls on all sides.
Sun when you want it and shade when you want it.

My cat lies in front of a little fan on a cool mat. She's a fan of a fan!

For me it has to be an air conditioning unit which we have in our bedroom (we do not move it about) currently 31 degrees in there but it should get down to 18/19 degrees. Fans circulate air but do not reduce room temperature whereas an air con unit works on a refrigeration cycle and reduces the temperature in the bedroom. Definitely works for us!

I have inverter air conditioning for downstairs. Great in the winter if needed fir heat but definitely doing its job in the current heat. Don't need it on all day long, think as it's pretty powerful and cools the whole area down quickly. Just as well as air conditioning is not cheap to run.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 26-Jun-26 16:12:27

One of the fans I bought was also a Meaco as a PP said its so quiet you have to have a good look to see if its on. So you can keep it on overnight whereas the air con unit is too noisy for night time.

Boadicea Fri 26-Jun-26 16:03:04

We have those silly windows where you can only open the very top - which I can't even reach in the downstairs rooms!
I have hung a piece of blackout material over the non-opening part.
Before we had the cats I would have left doors and windows open for a through breeze but now keep the bedroom door shut as one of them sheds so much (and I can't sleep with a cat coming and going at night!)

We have a very good shark fan. However our house is so very hot, I am thinking of getting airconditing installed in the sitting room, kitchen/dinner and the bedroom, my husband had dementia and is much worse in the heat and I hate the heat. Has anyone had ac installed and if so do you think it’s worth it? I believe the new units are very efficient and can be used as a heater in winter as well.

It's definitely cooler here today and the breeze is cooling, rather than a wave of warm air.
I don't think we'll get an AC unit & our old fan is still doing the job but as others have said, a way of covering the kitchen window (I have clip-in blinds on patio doors, but there's a wide very shallow window high above the sink which I've never felt needed covering before)

Plevey08 Fri 26-Jun-26 14:37:22

I've used a duux floor standing, silent tower fan. I like it. But read yesterday in GH that we are using them wrongly..who knew? We should be facing them towards an open window in the morning and evening/night so that the hot air in the room goes out the window. And to place a frozen bottle of water wrapped with a pillowcase in front of the fan. Otherwise we are just circulating hot air which isn't cooling the room. I did it last night and this morning and it did help with cooling.

Labradora Fri 26-Jun-26 14:36:42

We've put a fan , actually a small-ish one in the bedroom overnight to make things more tolerable. Because it's small it's not that noisy. Pro-rata its size it's made a real difference.Who knew ??

WHAT are snotmonster flies and where do you live, TheWeirdoAgain60??

You took the words out of my mouth! I too was mystified

semperfidelis Fri 26-Jun-26 14:33:58

I just sit in the room that faces North in this house. It's always shaded and it costs me nothing.

Apart from keeping a few soaked flannels around to cool my face and neck, I don't do anything else.

I'm not keen on noisy fans, the boiler getting in to gear and ticking clocks. I am a silence freak!

It works for me.

Ziplok Fri 26-Jun-26 14:12:10

If you have that many flies in the room TheWeiroAgain60 I think you should investigate - could there be something rotting nearby, eg a mouse?

mokryna Fri 26-Jun-26 14:08:07

Slimswim When you use your portable AC, do you have to have the window open?

We bought a portable air conditioning unit from Amazon in last year's heatwave. It's a life saver! Noisy, but makes the room comfortable to live in. We have fans in other rooms but they don't reduce to temperature. We've heard it's expensive to run so only use it in extreme temperatures like these past few days, but yesterday it was on all day and evening.

Slimswim Fri 26-Jun-26 13:47:51

We purchased a portable air conditioning unit a few weeks ago when we had the last spell of hot weather. When the weather changed after a few days I thought we had wasted our money. Now we’ve been sitting in the living room with it on and I’m pleased we bought it. Only negative thing is, it’s noisy and too heavy to carry up the stairs. Our neighbour has just had air conditioning installed, £15,000 but it will heat the house too.

I rather like my neck fan bought from Amazon
