Can anyone please recommend a good film to watch. Really struggling to find one and with the football on tv is going to be rather difficult to watch at the moment. Don't like too much swearing but I realise nowadays it's difficult to watch a film without swearing in it. Just a good old story please?

I must watch Mrs Harris again as I am trying to remember all of the storyline.
We are currently going through our stash of DVDs and re watching.
We like foreign films with sub titles. Il Postino is one favourite and Cinema Paradiso. Both watched lots of times...still cry at the end.

"Leon" with a very young Nathalie Portman we will re watch very soon. American so not subtitled but a bit violent. Also another American one "Smoke" is one we like.

One of the best films I've seen is 'Lion' a true story, very moving. At the end in the cinema people stood up and clapped.
Dev Patel stars.

Another one of his is 'Slumdog Millionaire', another great film. Both older films and worth second viewings.

Other favourites are 'Bohemian Rhapsody' the story of Queen. And 'Rocketman' about Elton John's life.

Absolutely agree with those choices. Lion moved me to tears.

I have found a lot of older and classic films on Youtube, "Goodnight Mr Tom" with John Thaw is one.

The Stepdaughter, starring Gil Gerard and Andrea Roth.

It was very well acted, and there were loads of gorgeous horses!

MRS Harris goes to Paris, you will love it

Following along for suggestions. I don’t like swearing or violence - so many modern films seem to contain copious amounts of both. As a result I mainly watch gardening and interiors programmes. I can recommend Mrs Harris goes to Paris - very up-lifting. I saw it at the cinema with a friend and we both enjoyed it.

It’s called “Disclosure Day” starring Emily Blunt and Colin Firth. My friend enjoyed it - I thought it was self indulgent
Nonsense, and I adored Close Encounters, but not this one.

👍🏻 I’ve never seen close encounters

Mrs Harris Goes To Paris is lovely.

I loved that! Also I think it’s called Mrs Callicat Cabbage Wars (?) but it’s with Pauline Collins and very funny.

Also Saving Grace.

I’ve recorded this and as I loved the book so much am a little anxious about how it translates. So good to hear your enjoyment of it.

Ditto! Loved the book and although I've recorded the film not sure whether to watch as don't want to be disappointed.

Thanks to whoever recommended Richard Jewell👍🏻 based on a true event, that poor security guy! Very well acted.

Watched Project Hail Mary (Apple TV & Amazon Prime I think).

It’s Sci Fi and really not my sort of thing but it’s intriguing and funny and we both enjoyed it.

I loved the book🥰

If you have Netflix watch Remarkably Bright Creatures
A good read as well 👍

Grandma600 Tue 16-Jun-26 16:38:29

Remarkably Bright Creatures starring Sally Field is quite a gentle film

missdeke Tue 16-Jun-26 16:24:25

I loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and Darkest Hour, another Lily James film is very watchable too.

Greyduster Tue 16-Jun-26 16:24:18

“Julie and Julia” starring Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci is a good watch. It’s on Netflix.

Greyduster Tue 16-Jun-26 16:19:54

The book it was based on is a cracker, Grammaretto.
