I had one lobe of my lung removed due to cancer in 2020, two weeks before lockdown! I was 66 years old. Never smoked and am pretty fit and healthy leading an active life with a reasonable diet. I was up and managing a shower on my own within a few days, that was the nicest feeling. The drain being removed was the worst bit, but just take a deep breath and hold, they whip it out very quickly so it’s not really anything to think about. Yes I was sore but not overwhelming so much to my surprise. I was at home in 5 days and the recovery was good. Just do as they say and do not overstretch or over tax yourself, just because you’re feeling good. Take the time to recover properly. I didn’t have any treatment after and have been five years clear. I hope the very positive posts on here from people who've had lung surgery have given you some comfort.

I’m 73, never smoked, had the upper right lobe removed plus a section of the middle lobe 14 months ago. I was only in for two nights and it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I had expected. Can I recommend you join the ‘lobectomy support’ group on Facebook. The people on there are incredibly helpful, you can ask them anything and I can guarantee someone will have been through the same thing! Take care of yourself, good luck.

The macmillan website also has many, many chat rooms where you n ask fellow sufferers of your particular cancer anything you like. They are all very keen to help others in the same boat. I am recovering from oral cancer (diagnosed 30 months ago, treated with radiotherapy, so far all clear).

Grannyjan my brother had a segment (not lobe) of his lung removed as a cancerous nodule was picked up during a national screening programme for ex smokers. He was 71 at the time.

The surgery was VATS - Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery. He was out of hospital after 3 days and is fine 3 years later (having regular checkups). Apart from initial pain and discomfort as there is after any surgery, he recovered very rapidly. He was, like you, reasonably fit and regained his strength very well. He did short walks as soon as he felt strong enough post surgery and gradually increased that.

I was very involved with lung cancer, both parents having it in 1979 but times have moved on thankfully.

Hello Grannyjan1953. I had a lobectomy in 2023. The lower lobe of my right lung removed by VATS surgery due to cancerous nodules. Had the operation on the Friday, discharged the following Tuesday evening. They will likely have you up and walking around the ward very soon. Cannot stress how much they want you to walk as much as possible after the procedure. Remember the consultant saying that the worse bit would probably be the drain and its removal. In the event I was fine, the only thing I needed a doctor for when I was home was to change the antibiotics I was on. I was later offered 4 rounds of preventative chemo. At first I had twice yearly CT scans, they have now reduced to one a year up to five years from the Op.

Better to hear from people who have been through it, though, I always think.

One of my favourite podcasters has lung cancer and he’s doing really well. There are so many new treatments and he’s really positive.
