What have things come to? The London Evening Standard has reported this afternoon what appears to be another arson attack in Golders Green. This time setting light to a pushchair parked in a block of flats where many young Jewish families live. Here's the cut and paste from the article which left me speechless: 'The Met Police said officers were keeping an open mind as to the man's motive'. I'm putting this on Chat because I'm so shocked, I don't really know where to post this.

I just saw this.

I despair, I really do. There is just too much hatred in this world.

Everything I have read, or listened to, or seen over the last few days has been distressing and almost incomprehensible.

I never thought I would I say something like this, but I think I'm glad I'm nearing the end of my journey here rather than just beginning it. sad

Just so depressing isn’t it?

Marg75 Wed 03-Jun-26 21:37:23

ferry23 I often think the same thing, saying 'I'm glad I'm the age I am'.

ferry23 and Marg75 how sad.

Yes I understand how you can feel this way but we just need to keep remembering that most people around us are good, kind and honest people.

Let's hope that those who did this awful crime will be caught and punished.

That’s just sick.

Things are hotting up now. I wonder what the outcome will be?.

Cossy Thu 04-Jun-26 14:53:53

Shocking and appalling and totally unacceptable.

Sadly, this is what happens when certain groups stir up hate on other groups.

It’s utterly unacceptable and I hope they catch the perpetrators and punish them.

👍 Well said, I still believe that these awful crimes, committed by awful people, are still in the minority.

It may be a racial crime but it could be similar to those people who steal wheelchairs and adapted vehicles for the disabled. People who put graffiti on buildings etc Some warped minds think things are "funny" . I'm a vegan and often find people have put packs of meat next to vegan products. Again they think it is funny.
Unless people are causing harm they are not happy .

Sounds like a hate crime to me. There was a news item earlier about a junior football team with many Jewish players who arrived to fund their opponents with free Palestine on their sleeves

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its a duck
The anti semites been parking across the driveway of known Jews.
When the police are called miraculously the car comes to life.

ronib Thu 04-Jun-26 16:08:46

I would expect lots of surveillance cameras plastered over Golders Green by now. I hope the local police can make some attempt to track down the culprits. Asap.

rowyn Thu 04-Jun-26 16:15:27

Maybe we should remind the world of what happened to many Jewish people during the war. I'm pretty sure that the perpetrators of these crimes have absolutely NO idea.

Iam64 Thu 04-Jun-26 16:20:57

Many anti semites are also holocaust deniers

ronib Thu 04-Jun-26 16:28:45

How does this translate into burning a child’s pushchair? Iam64

I find this a pretty horrifying thing to do!

I don’t understand your question

ronib Thu 04-Jun-26 21:04:03

Why does a Holocaust denier feel the need to set fire to a child’s pushchair? The Holocaust was almost 80 years ago. Golders Green has moved on. Iam64

Iam64 Thu 04-Jun-26 21:09:54

Well that’s your view ronib
My experience of Jewish friends is to dismiss the Holocaust as 80 years ago so cheetham hill/Prestwich has moved on is a long way from the truth. The few remaining survivors are keeping a go bag by the door and talking of going to Israel because they don’t feel safe any more

Isn’t that because there’s a complete breakdown of law and order in the UK now? Jewish communities are having to organise themselves for protection which should be provided by the State. Iam64

What is wrong with ‘people’ well those who do such cowardly ugly acts are monsters.
That poor Mother - imagine how you would feel.
Why can’t we be kind to each other - it’s 💔

I don’t think that’s true, ronib.

I'm another who doesn't think it's true that there's been a complete breakdown of law and order.

We can argue about the millions provided in funding by the government to enable Jewish volunteers to secure synagogues and residential areas but … who is going to tackle the root causes of anti Semitism? Isn’t this a failure in government policy?
