Air Fryer Cleaning

I have a Ninja, which does everything - slow cook, pressure cook, roast, bake, air crisp and all bells and whistles. I am sure that someone must know to which model I am referring. (unable to find the booklet!).

Obviously, the base unit is easy to take out and wash, although getting everything off which is clarted on, is well nigh impossible. What concerns me is the accumulation of grease under the lid where the fan resides. I tried steaming it today, with no effect.

The instructions state that the lid should never be dismantled. So how is one supposed to get into that area?

Any solution to this conundrum would be gratefully received. Or is this just another example of built-in obsolescence?

I've had mine for several years now and find it really easy to clean. I've never had a problem with grease building up around the fan - but apparently you can put hot water and lemon juice in and pop it on the pressure cook function for five to 10 minutes, then it should wipe off.
I know you're not supposed to dismantle the lid to deep clean it, but I'm on a couple of Ninja FB groups and apparently if you google it, there are clips which show you how to do it safely.

I buy paper liners to go in mine. Hot soapy water.
I have seen air fryer sprays but are they just a gimmick?
Also you could try soda crystals & soak in that.
Mine doesn’t have a lid as such.

My air fryer's 12 years old now. I just clean the base unit unless it starts venting smoke as well as steam (usually if I've cooked bacon) in which case I give the element in the top a wipe with warm water & detergent after using it (once cooled a bit) & that solves the problem for months.

Mine is a Ninja 14 in 1, and I'm the same, valdali. I wash the pot and wipe the inner bit, with an occasional wipe of the bottom of the lid.

I've heard people say they put a dishwasher tab in water and run the steam function, but I've never felt the need. They get so hot I can't see splashes being a problem.

The economy of an air fryer compared to a conventional oven is massive. I just unplug the thing and clean the bits I can!

Agreed. I love them. They don’t fry anything, but a lot of people are put off because they think that’s all they do.

They should be renamed as crispers or something.

Dalrymple 23 I had the same problem with my Ninja and tried multiple ways of cleaning the fan and element. I tried all sorts of methods without much success.

The final straw was when I realised the sudden encroachment of the smaller size cockroaches in my kitchen were coming from the airfryer!

I googled it and found lots of people had the same experience, the little horrors get into the vent at the back because they like the warm space. The most consistent online advice was to dump it and buy another.

I did just that and bought the Ninja Crispi because the design means there is no vent and no non stick surfaces. I wash the top guard with warm soapy water after each use and so far so good.

You can unscrew the safety plate if necessary however it voids your warranty. If I eventually need to do that I will, because the warranty last two years which was basically the age of the fryer I threw out.

I have a small airfryer which I put in the dishwasher after leaving it to soak with a dishwasher tablet overnight it’s really no problem doing this and it comes out in the morning nice and fresh ready for use

When ours has cooled after use I lay it on its side and brush any bits off the element. Then I carefully wipe between the element and the upper metal plate with a damp cloth to remove and splatter. The cooking bin thingy is easy to clean using hot water, washing soda and a little washing up liquid - leave to soak for a short while and the muck just lifts off. Rinse and dry……done!

I don’t know about ninjas other than they are expensive. Our Aldi 4,6 litre £35 air fryer is used every day. We wash the basket after use as you would a saucepan and highly recommend.

Don’t be put off MissA they are great. They are cheaper and quicker than an oven and very versatile.
I noticed a small 2 litre one in Asda for £15. Perfect for one/ two.
Two year guarantee what’s not to like.

Peeps, RTT, dalrymple was asking about the element part, not the basket or any other moving parts.

I wipe around the element and then I use a soft toothbrush which seems to dislodge any stray bits caught in it. Recommended to me by ...,I can't remember! It seem to work though.

Same here. I've had mine for about six years now and I've never needed to do more than that either. And it is used a lot too.

I have an oven type air fryer with shelves which is very good and only needs a wipe out after use. I can see the element through the vents at the back and it doesn’t seem particularly dirty - I assume that the heat burns any grease away. The only bit that does get a bit mucky is the bit underneath the pull down door where crumbs tend to accumulate. You can take the door off, but I keep reading that it was the devils own job to get it back on again, so I haven’t tried it.

I ve had mine 3/4 years I use it a number of times a day and only ever needed to wipe it out and wash the removable shelf
Never ever had a cockroach in my home !!! Only time I ve ever seen them was when I lived in Malaysia

Don’t get put off MissA or anyone else they are soooo easy and look after themselves I just cut a piece of greasproof paper to lay in the bottom under the removable shelf and that can be thrown out after a few uses
I do everything from my toast in the morning to my main meal and crumbles cheese straws etc never used my oven since I ve had the (cheapish) air fryer ( under £50)

Do you need to leave space around it, and does it get greasy around where it stands, please? smile

My son bought a larger one and gave me his old one. I’ve only used it a couple of times. I did a baked potato in it as they were supposed to be really delicious when cooked in one but it just tasted steamed, not baked. I must get into the habit of using it but don’t really know where to start.
