A Light Hearted Look at Nicknames

My back scratcher is nic-named Bob.
When I asked hubby to scratch my back on holiday, he said he wishes I had brought BoB 🤣

My daughter now in her 50s - used to wear a nappy and waterproof pants which after numerous washes tended to get a bit stiff and crackly.

We named her “ tin drawers” and to this day she answers to “tin”

I never had a nickname , my name was just shortened. At grammar school we were given a French name, for use during French classes. E.g. Peter was Pierre. There was no equivalent to my name so I was given Marthe,… which I hated.

never mind family members, my husband has nicknamed the whole street we ever have a neighbour nicknamed 'sperm donor'

My best friend and I had the same surname, so I was known as 'Wee xxxxxx' and she was known as 'Big xxxxxx.'

My Dad used to call me Ajax after a cleaning stuff? At school I was called hedgehog a take on my family name.

We didn’t do nick names in our family. I’m loving tin knickers, though! 🤣

A friend was at uni with Gordon Brown. GB was known as Sugar, not just for his surname but also his fondness for the lasses.

The school bullies called me Dimsey rhymes with my first name!!

My DH gave most of my DD's boyfriends ridiculous nicknames. She always could tell which ones he liked as those he didn't like didn't get a name.
He didn't do the same with our son's girlfriends.

'Bowfie' is an old Scots term, describing someone who is a bit fat/chubby - which (looking back at the old photos, I am forced to concede) I was as a baby. Hence, for (far too) many years, I was known within the family as Bowfie.

My DH has a pen with a rubber tip which he uses to type on his iPad. This is always referred to as ‘the pokey thing!’ I once had a cat that would eat anything who was always called Dustbin.
Being very tall and skinny I was catcalled ‘Lanky’ at school which always upset me (goodness I wish I was that skinny now, I’d happily accept the catcalls!) My DD sadly suffered the same fate, she was called ‘Beanpole’. However, when in her teens she looked like a super model, the same boys tried to chat her up, they soon got short shrift!

That jogged my memory, Dragonfly. My sons referred to one of my DD’s boyfriends as ‘Single Cell’. Dear reader, she did not marry him, thankfully!

My eldest daughter had a friend called Bin. Transpired she was called Lydia. Her parents started to call her (weirdly) Bin Lid when she was a baby. She's 45 now and still goes by Bin.

My husband nicknamed our daughter Rebel and still calls her that now despite her never having been rebellious.

My father used to call me Fanny! That was long before it got its present meaning.

As an aside when in hospital after a miscarridge, we had a real character in the ward. When she woke from surgery she grapped her false teethwhich flew across the floor and out she tottered with surgery gown wide open. But tbe point of this story is that when Drs did their round she asked how he recog ised us ,-"face or fanny"

John Boy (He's got a big family, like The Waltons)
Big Tash (huge moustache)

When we were children we had:

Mrs Magoo (thick pebble glasses)
Mr Whiffy (smelly old man)
Onion man (he wore a stripy top and rode a bike)
Funny Woman (she used to hiss at children and shake her bag at them)
Cyclops (one eyed woman at the corner shop)
Chalky (retired headmaster)
Trigger (milkman's horse - grey mare called Dolly)

My mother used to call my sister and myself Mary Jane and Fanny Adams, only when she was cross with us.

We also have names for characters in the village: bobble hat, sotty ( always in the pub), Hoppity Harry, ( walks like on springs) and McNabb ( Scotsman) . No idea what their real names are. Others are known by their dogs name!
