Here you are new people😊

Let us know a bit about yourselves and I’m sure you will get replies.

I’m an oldie - been on GN since 2011 - I was 65 at the time now 80 😮😮😮. I’m one of the ones who have fierce arguments about politics etc, but I also love gardening, nature in all its glory, reading, food and art history and history. Not necessarily in that order😄.

I think that many on GN have made very close friends on this site, which they seem to value very much.

I am in awe at some of the creativity I see.

Welcome and make yourselves known

Yes, welcome new members. I can’t remember how I came across Gransnet, but it must have been about eight years ago. One of the regular posters at the time was Galen. Some on here will remember her. I look forward to receiving my Gransnet email every day, though I know I could access posts without receiving the daily quota. Like another poster said, I often have a mental image of how some posters look, and in some cases, I could possibly guess accurately who the poster is without looking at the name. Thank you all for your company.

I joined in 2022 so a newbie. I cant recall how I found gransnet. I don't think anyone told me.

It was a very, very difficult personal time and it was a relief to talk about politics and not face my difficulties when I was looking up political stuff which is basically a life long interest and active in. It kept me going I don't know how I'd have done without it when very ill stuck home alone..

Then I found all the other threads and I have learnt so very much, about so many things and people. And asked for tips or help on this and that, it's just great for that.

How did others come across Gransnet?

Hello, I joined gransnet a while ago. I love reading the posts & posted a few times. smile

Just popping in to say hello to the new posters'. I've been on GN for around 6/7 years.
If you are new and would like to meet face to face, go to the Meet up forum and ask if anyone from your area would like to meet.
I've met up with several GN members.
Best wishes to everyone who is new.... and to all the not so new. smile

Ladies you are such great company, you feel like family?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 27-May-26 20:41:53

I always have face and body for the names, but I know that I will be entirely wrong.

polly123 Wed 27-May-26 18:40:37

Hello, I have been reading and very occasionally posting on this site for a few years now. I have always enjoyed all the different areas covered and found helpful and supportive comments when I posted with a question. I have never met anyone from the site but it would be nice to put faces to names.

I’d like to say a big “hello” to the new posters who have posted on this thread. You all sound interesting and will have plenty to offer, so please don’t be shy posting 😁.

Hello, too, to the regulars who have posted. 😁

What a good idea to start this thread, Whitewavemark2.

jocork Wed 27-May-26 17:10:07

Also not a newbie and I too have never started a post though I sometimes comment. I can't remember how long agoI joined but it was before I was granny. I realised I was in the age group and found some of the threads interesting. I now have 3 GC so more than 6 years ago, probably nearer 10. Still miss the helpful advice from GSM!

TerriBull Wed 27-May-26 16:29:28

Oh this is a nice thread and a good idea WW.

Of course I shouldn't be on it I've been on GN since around the time of The Dark Ages, AD 2011 or '12. Dim and distant past.

Welcome to anyone who is a newbie or to those who are thinking of making that first post, well do it! Right here. smile

Seapebble Wed 27-May-26 16:08:36

Not sure exactly when but joined about a year ago. I've never started a new thread but have replied to a few. If I can be honest and not offend - the "old tech feel" is quite annoying (and I'm old by most reckonings). No alert when someone replies in a thread etc. You have to wade through a thread to find a past comment - no "user history" etc. I'm hoping you'll say "no - you've got it wrong - it does all those things". Honestly I'll be happy to hear it. There's a lot of wisdom here and a fair bit of silly stuff (all welcome). I am in awe at how brave, honest and tough many GNetters are.

Hello, All
Not new but seldom post. I found GN 2 or 3 years ago and absolutely love this site. You are such a caring group and all your caring posts seem so sincere to me.
I live in the USA but have loved the UK and its' history all my life. Don't think I will get there now. I like to google the places you mention when you travel, the flowers you grow in your gardens and sometimes the dishes you cook!
I am widowed and my son lives with me since his divorce. He has his own problems and is estranged from one of his two daughters.
My Harley Cat passed away suddenly 2 years ago at 13 and that broke my heart.
I used to call myself a musician but no more. Too old to travel and have some arthritis in hands. So many of my musical companions are gone or ill.
See what I mean? I'm not interesting but oh my! You are a fascinating bunch!
Thanks for your postings that are so comforting and fascinating for folks like me!

Thank you and welcome. I rarely post but love reading all the postings. I have always lived in and around London apart from a while in my early childhood when we lived in Oxford. Only been to the US once for a long weekend 25 years ago. SadIy I am too old to travel now (except within the UK).

Charleygirl5 Wed 27-May-26 10:29:39

Excuse me WWMbut who are you calling elder? I am a mere 82 with most of my marbles. I also have been here since time began. I have two very good pen friends and two friends I meet for coffee. We live opposite ends of London so it is difficult.

I used to meet three others locally, but one has moved away so the three of us meet regularly at Waitrose for coffee.

I have picked up good tips on GN, but I stay clear of politics or anything controversial. Those days are over, I prefer a quiet life.

Good morning to everyone, it is very much appreciated to be asked to join in, as a newbie. Thank you 🙂 I live in the UK but have just moved away from home to try and be of some help to a family member who is about to have really challenging surgery. So my usual support systems are not so handy, I thought I’d check in here and read the wisdom of the elders!

Hello 😊

One thing the elders on here are really good at is coming up with ideas etc if you are needing support.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 27-May-26 08:31:32

Oh I am dim at times😄😄. Harvey sounded a delight though.

Blimey violin that’s impressive. Did you belong to an orchestra or what?

Was classical music your style?

Llamas99 Wed 27-May-26 08:27:54

WWM2! I'm sorry to mislead you - Harley is not a breed of cat but his name! Actually, Harley Catfish and this name was acquired when my DGDs came in the door and remarked that he looked like a catfish. He was a rescue that the DGDs and their Mom had found newly born in the snow. I refused to visit while the kittens were there and absolutely refused to entertain the thought of adopting one. My husband was ill and I felt I couldn't handle at the time. They brought him over on Valentines Day, solid black with a red ribbon in a pink basket. Being solid black, when he grew a few long white whiskers at a few months old, he did bring a catfish to mind.
Thus, his name!
The weather here has been tolerable with a few showers and temps 80s daytime and mid sixties nights.
Sorry for the long post and take care, All!
The violin is my instrument!

Greyduster Wed 27-May-26 08:14:27

Welcome, MightbeaVermeer. I love your user name😊. I have been on GN since Adam as a lad and there are some truly lovely helpful, supportive people on here. I also like to see posters from other countries joining us - it gives a fresh perspective.

I also love architecture. I first got really fascinated when doing art history as part of my degree - about 100 years ago😀.

What period do you particularly like. My taste has changed over the years really. Now I’m beginning to appreciate the Victorians - which I thought I never would.

Good morning from the U.K. where as no doubt you have read we are in the middle of a heat wave. What is the weather like there?

So sorry to hear you lost you little cat - what is a Harley Cat? - I lost my little terrier a couple of years ago snd last year Roo a rescue aged 10 came to live with us. We got her from cats protection - they have lots of older cats waiting for love and a forever home. Do you have the equivalent there?

Interested to read that you are a musician. Did you sing or play an instrument. I would so love to have such a skill. What sort of music?

I don’t remember anyone on here being a musician - am probably wrong but they are certainly a real novelty!!

Would love to hear more😊

Hello, I am also not in the UK and am newly widowed 😢 carimg for.my AC who lives with me now due to cancer. GNetters are so kind when your life gets difficult. Lots of love here. I also learn what to do when I dont know what to do! Sadness can be overwhelming and it's nice to not feel so terribly alone.

I cant read the news anymore since it is mostly phoney, money-driven and censored but I like to see whats new in the world by reading GN.

I enjoy humor, love, nature and learning. I am from an I.T. background but enjoy architecture.
