It's not a matter of 'cloak and dagger secrecy', it's a matter of confidentiality.

When an employer disciplines or dismisses an employee, they are under no obligation to discuss it with other employees. In reality, staff will often find out eventually through the grapevine, but confidentiality responsibilities prevent employers from broadcasting HR business.

Forums are no different. A certain level of confidentiality still applies. What goes on behind the scenes is a matter between the owners / mods and the member in question.

Any information put forward to other members is entirely at the discretion of those running such forums.

It would obviously be nice to know what happened and why, but unfortunately, being given that information isn't a right, even though it would be nice to have it.

An excellent post. Having worked within the health service I too am aware of the importance of confidentiality issues.

Mollygo, that's precisely the point. Irrespective of the fact we'd like to know what's going on (including me, as it happens), discretion has to be observed.

I'm not against this discussion at all, I do understand it. I'm just explaining, from personal experience, how moderation works.

It has to be cloak and dagger unless posters who report, admit they have reported.

If you were to post the name of the person who you think, or are even certain did Thé reporting, that would probably get another deletion and a suspension or an outright ban.

Neither can I. It’s as though communicating with older posters (compared to Mumsnet) is so full of complex issues that we have to be kept in the dark for everyone’s good.

We’re just normal folk with brains and empathy.

I suspect most removals are actually as a result of people making hurtful personal comments, rather than expressing their political views?

I hope that's the case - which doesn't seem a nice thing to say obviously because hurtful remarks can have an affect, but if someone is banned for their political opinion (whichever stripe it is), then that really is worrying.

Not sure either is true though - unkind remarks and hardline political views... do they really get posters banned? Or is it more the language used, the victimisation / denigration of someone?

If that is made clear by GNHQ, it might help?

I believe - and this is entirely my own POV so accept others won't necessarily agree - that politics thread, by their very nature, are going to throw up contentious posts and comments, and that we should be prepared for some heat when entering the arena; additionally, I've begun to understand that people express themselves in their own unique way and that, for example, what might sound harsh to my mind will not necessarily seem like that to another person - nor even the one who makes the comments. One of the people we've mentioned on here who is no longer able to post, had a very direct way of communicating which, to some, was offensive. However, I don't think said person ever set out to deliberately offend, rather to make her point. I think she was someone with a strict code and principles basically and, as I mentioned in an earlier post, it's possible to like someone, even if you don't share their worldview (or most of it anyway). In fact, I got to know this person a little, off-site, and found her very likeable and, in fact, quite kind. I think most will know who I'm talking about.

Agreed. It is important that we find out about the process mentioned by HQ early in the thread, so that we can feel confident to post our views, and to disagree with the views of others without fear of deletion.

(When I saw ‘Good morning Allira’ on the thread preview for a moment I thought she was back!)

I don’t think the N&P board will ever change - too many people looking for an argument. Plus some posts are deliberate windups in my opinion. I don’t avoid it all together, but I don’t post on it as much as I used to. Just not worth it.

You’re not alone. I’ve had so many messages saying the same thing.
The News and Politics thread will be the poorer for it unless you count the price of eggs in Tesco’s going up.
I will say though that the majority of us who post on N&P don’t look for offence.
