I recall when I visited Ilfracombe in North Devon many years ago, they had a "can bank" to recycle your drinks cans.Along side was a can crusher where you could crush the can and reduce the space they took up in the collection point.I visited Ilfracombe recently and the can crusher was not there any more.Do you have any can crushers in your neck of the woods,or know if they are still around.

You can buy wall mounted can crushers that work well. I have a SEN relative who loves using it.

I stamd on my drinks cans and plastic milk containers. I squash them flat to save space in my recycling bin. The same with cardboard boxes. I also manage to squash food cans quite well. Wear shoes not slippers. Squashing does make a difference to the available space. Four pinter milk containers take up a lot of space before squashing them.

I crush everything, wash everything out, take out the plastic windows & rip off the gummy bit on envelopes.
Then hear it’s all incinerated anyway 😩

I stayed as a helping mum 30 plus years ago with a group of Brownies on a pack holiday. Brown owl taught the girls to take the top and then the bottom of baked beans can off, after use of course, with a tin opener and then squash the tin very flat. Took up no space at all. And these were big cans. Beans for 30. We had veey little plastic just cereal packets and bottles. All washed before binning.
I wonder if those almost 50 year olds do the same now.

They are satisfying but our blue bin is huge- It's never more than ⅙ full even with everything but plastic milk bottles being left whole.

Who was that strong man from years ago ?
Geoff Capes I think his name was.

I’m just back from Portugal, whilst stocking up on tonic water there, was surprised how more expensive they were, with my poor Portuguese and an assistant wanting to improve her English, understanding there is now an extra charge which can be redeemed at a crushing machine, stops people littering, what a great idea😀

Can crushers are available on Amazon for £9-99p , works great !

I have one at home. Can’t remember where I got it from but it works really well - great fun.

We used to have a trash compactor built into our kitchen in the US, fantastic piece of equipment never understood why they haven't taken off here. Just put all such things in the designated bin, press the button and hey presto, drastically reduced.

If you can find the kitchen gadget for crushing boiled potatoes into "snow" rather than mash, an old one works very well for crushing thin drinks cans or plastic containers for cream etc.

You can also buy can crushers - most boat clubs have one.

Now I'm intrigued, why would boat clubs specifically have can crushers?

Never saw one at any recycling places I've ever been to.erhaps they'd be vandalised now or perhaps just not the spare cash to provide them ?

cc Mon 25-May-26 16:05:39

We had one of these for years, just look up wall mounted can crushers on Amazon, they work well and don't need much force.
