Treats?

I'm just back from shopping at an unfamiliar supermarket. I've had a whale of a time buying all sorts of things I fancied. Now I'm home I'm thinking. Realistically, I can buy anything I actually want (but I don't usually). There are no real treats left. What do people think? Is it just me or are there treats I haven't thought of?

Fortnum's ginger and chilli biscuits.

I do think the 'all year round treats' has taken some of the sparkle out of Christmas for me now.

A decent piece of fish, preferably fresh, Dover sole, halibut, cod loin or hake. Or even better, order it in a restaurant, which I’ve done occasionally, apart from the sole.

You think you know people and then they start describing a bounty as a treat. I am always happy to agree to disagree but that is just a step too far oreosmile

I got a little treat today, a tiny 2ox pack of butter made in Caerphilly, with garlic and herbs, and some 1912 Golden Blue cheese. I like to try a different treat every week.

When I was a child life was full of small treats, because there were so many things we didn't have.

Sweets were a treat, as they were on ration. A glass of suash with lunch instead of water, the bottle lived on the top shelf in the pantry and came down for birthdays and other celebrations. Soft fruit. The strawberry season was short and the fruit were expensive, we might have them 2 or 3 times over a summer, likewise ice cream, perhaps one or two over a weeks holiday, ata home, occasionally for Sunday lunch in the summer only.

The thing was, there were so many of these small treats, that with luck one would get one every week on average. Now we have most things all the time, so we have to create our own treats.

I love hummous, if it is in the house it lasts only a few hours, so to stop me bingeing on it, I only eat it when I visit DS and family and they always get it in for my visits. It is a real treat.

A bag of chips with salt and vinegar on served in newspaper and eaten as you walk along. Can’t happen now I know.
And chips have never seemed the same.

Hummus and rice cakes.
One of my favourite treats.

A bacon roll or a toasted tea cake at our local cafe.

M0nica that's exactly it. Treats really were rare in those days. Now I can just have anything I want so they aren't really treats any more.sad

I still think treats exist, a luxury ice cream bar, buttered toasted hot cross buns, cream teas.

My treat today is a deep full body massage. A luxury at £55 for 50 minutes. I’d go every month if I could justify the expense. No ‘visible’ sign to show for it but a very welcome relaxed feeling for me, much needed.

I’m looking forward to the first tiny peas - eaten raw of course! Shouldn’t be long now!
