A letter in the Guardian this morning giving what the writer thinks as a definitive list of what is cool and what is not cool.

I’ll list some

Cool

Less is more - I definitely agree
Monty Don and his jacket
Listening more when talking
Authenticity

Elder cool people include - Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt, George Clooney

People who speak out against injustice.
People who care more about others
Love is cool
Forgiveness is cool

Not cool

Silence is not cool if it is cold
Destroying the planet for financial gain
Killing civilians
Killing children
Belief in supremacy
Hatred

Thanks to

What is cool?

If you have to ask, you don’t need to know grin

TerriBull Wed 05-Nov-25 14:36:00

Cool! James Dean had it, not that I remember him from his brief heyday, but his legacy of pictures/posters coolness exudes from every pore, the white t shirt and the ability to have a fag dangling nonchalantly from the mouth, the derision for cigarettes was light years away, smoke away like a chimney and they did, the tagline was "cool as a mountain stream". He only made 3 movies so maybe it was the tragedy of dying young whilst still in the first flush of youth that kept that image alive. Other super cool men from a slightly later era would be Alain Delon and Steve McQueen and I think I'd also like to nominate Thierry Goddard "Gilou" in Spiral, he kind of looked like he needed a damn good wash, but part of his Gallic anti hero charm. Dying young and a Lord Byron legacy of bad, mad and dangerous to know, keeps the images of Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Dylan Thomas even, right up there on the top shelf of coolness. And Che Guevara who adorned thousands of walls mainly because of his ability to wear a beret with panache, unlike hapless Michael Crawford in "Some Mothers Do Have 'Em" who didn't! Some can be cool in their lifetime, David Bowie, innovator extraordinaire and master of reinvention. The much mentioned Brian Ferry, wasn't it amazing how Jerry Hall worked her way downwards from super cool Brian via not so cool Mick, Keith always had the edge on him, to ending up with, well almost, it was the fags that done for her with Rupert allegedly! to the antithesis of anything but cool, the sublime to the ridiculous six degrees of separation or less maybe. Retrospectively Elvis is now cool, but somehow he wasn't then, I think maybe Austin Butler's cinematic performance helped that along. Having said that it would never work for Cliff Richard I'm afraid to say! should there be a biopic made of his life. Mystique in the answer it was easy to be James Dean without any social media, before we all knew what they're inclined to say and think a positive myriad of "my truth" and at times a load of woo woo and way too much information that just makes me grit my teeth and think "go away Lily Allen" I don't want to hear anymore about your non monogamous marriage that's gone tits up what do you expect it was even in the ST the other day! is there no escape from the trials and tribulations of the over exposed these days?

Here's "cool" from Anthony Hopkins who when asked to comment about something political he said something along the lines of "don't ask me, I'm an actor, that's what I do I act"

Tbh I did wonder if it was April 1st reading that list.

Non-cool people are those who grump, and dismiss the idea without giving a reasoned explanation.

Cool people are those that engage with the thread and give consideration to what the OP is suggesting like terriBull 😊

Cool for me has nothing to do with fashion or trend. It is a concept that for me means a person who is non-judgemental and confident and has the ability to make others feel comfortable and relaxed.

You may have your own meaning of 'cool' but you cannot expect other people to bow to your definition and treat it as sacrosanct, and any list of cool that includes Monty Don and his jacket alongside killing children - and why is killing adults not included, all children become adults and adults were once children. A t what age does killing children cease to be uncool?

Does that mean that in future we have to visit and consider every silly publicits list of trending subjects as if they were serious propositions as if the were pearls of wisdom from some prophet's mouth?

In fact it sickened me to see two such concepts as Monty Don and killing children on the same list.

And as I pointed out in my first post, to be uncool, something has first to be cool. When has killing children been 'cool'?

Whoever the writer of this list was, I hold them in contempt and I find your self-serving definition of cool unpleasant. I thought better of you whitewavemark2

How uncool to live in a place called Nylon too 😱🤣🤞🤣😱🤣🤞🤣

I wondered if it was a made up address tbh🤭 I’d rather live in Wool, or Organic-Cotton.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 05-Nov-25 14:20:31

Cool is something undefinable, it’s like style you either have it or you don’t.

If you are trying to define cool, one thing you definitely are not is cool

Grump, grump, grump roses most uncool
No need to get personal WWM2 - even more uncool.
Is any opinion which doesn’t match yours “grump, grump, grump” ?
Or do I have to prostrate myself in flattering adulation?
It was a rubbish definition of a concept by some geezer nobody has ever heard again or indeed wants to ever again.

Let it go, let it gooooo🎼

Love your " not cools" ferry

Couldn't agree more. A couple of them, I wish would just quietly fade away.

Oreo Wed 05-Nov-25 13:22:15

I’m super cool btw 😎

Cool is a word with many meanings, depending on who is using it.
I feel lukewarm about the word.

X posts 😄yours is the more succinct.

Without, not within.

Being cool in my opinion means not being afraid to stand against the crowd in order to argue for the persecuted and oppressed.
Being uncool, again in my opinion, means being one of the crowd because it is just easier to take the line of least resistance.

You have just proved within a shadow of a doubt, as has Whitewavemark2 that cool and uncool are entirely subjective, every person on the planet would provide a different list.

In your eyes only Whitewavemark2 😁
It’s an idiotic list from a random person in Switzerland.

Young Bryan Ferry was cool😍

Beg to differ hollysteers - young Bryan Ferry was hot

That must be VERY cool,

being hot and cool at the same time.

It's just a word folks! Often used to describe someone who is laid back and on point.

Don't get wound up about it. Let's try not to turn every thread into an extra chapter of War & Peace.

👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

So does that mean I’m cool?😄😄😄 . Never in a month of Sundays tbh.

No.
You said that
Cool . . .

That means you’re not cool because you were judgemental and didn’t make Rosieandhermaw feel comfortable and relaxed.

Please don’t tell Monty Don he’s cool. A bit of good (preferably British) tailoring is cool, not the shabby linen ‘workwear’ jackets he keeps trotting out🙄!

Brad Pitt - elder????
Stopped reading at that point.
Too much virtue signalling - and tosh.

Yes but that means you’re cool.
On the other hand

Cool . . . is a concept that for me means a person who is non-judgemental and confident and has the ability to make others feel comfortable and relaxed.
This, from the poster who doesn’t fit the criteria quoted, is the coolest thing I’ve read today. 🤣🤣

Whitewavemark2 Wed 05-Nov-25 12:16:40

My DH is the same age and people say he looked like Brian Ferry (I’ll try to get a photo) - so definitely hot😄😄😄. Well back then.
