It sounds like something the fabulous Ken Dodd would say. I have to say that I loved him, such a clever, erudite & kind gentle man.

I remember "sitting there like Piffy on a rock bun"!

That takes me back to childhood and the days of coal fires. We'd buy a bag of nutty slack (basically a bag of broken coal nuts the size of gravel and dust) to put on the fire to keep it burning gently for a few hours when you didn't want a blaze. It would sit in the coal shed ready to use when needed, doing nothing, just 'sitting' there waiting.

Is that what nutty slack was?

I'm embarrassed to say I thought it must be some kind of sweetie.

Yep I remember that one, I think is pithy on a rock bun referring to the pith/peel used.
But is pronounced piffy.
My old mum and aunts would also say ‘sat there like a sack of spuds’.
Also I remember my mum ordering nutty slack coal when we had real fires.

Yes I remember that too.

My parents used nutty slack to “ bank up” the coal fire every night and then in the morning it would still be smouldering when it would be riddled, a few pieces of firewood, ( sold in wire wrapped bundles) added and then the coal.
A good fire burning well in minutes.
Happy memories.

Sitting there like Venus on a rock bun was what was said in our house. If I pulled my belt in tight round my waist my Mum would say I looked light a sack of potatoes tied in the middle.

My dad used to say that. It was what cheap coal used to be called in the old days. It caused a lot of health problems and fog.

No, I was only a small child when we had a coal fire.

The ex, up in the wilds of Scotland had a coal fire, but he dealt with it.

He/she is neither use nor ornament.
