Many of us have pointed out in the past the short-sightedness of this government in closing down the Sure Start scheme which provided support for young families with a view to improving the future life chances of small children.
Retrospective research has now shown that children in postcodes where Sure Start was operating have had better measurable GCSE results.
We need a government that can think long term, rather than espousing policies that are of the moment only and politically motivated.
This government's investment in children consists of subsidising child care so that parents can go out to work, rather than supporting parents to do their job better. So many young parents are dashing about trying to work and parent to the detriment of the whole family's well-being and very little financial gain - the so-called "free" nursery places are no such thing. Parents are charged for food, nappies etc. because the government subsidy is insufficient for nurseries and child minders to balance the books, so they have to make charges - at rates that are higher than cost.
There is an immense philosophical difference between using government money to take children from their parents and using it to support parents in their important role.
For some, being a working parent is a positive choice, but our policies for children should not funnel people down this route, as for many it is not an option that helps parents to thrive and do their job well.
Young people ‘expected’ to engage with government's new work support plans.
