Grandparents Day anyone?

I just saw tomorrow is National Pancake Day. I will be planning accordingly by driving myself over to IHOP and getting pancakes for breakfast.

I'm mindful that not all children have GPs, this could be a sensitive topic for some children. As not all children have both parents or a mum, father. I think this is best not promoted.

I have never seen an Orthodontist Day Hallmark card at any point in the last 20 years and I have lived in 5 states in different area of this country.

I could see an employee of an Orthodontist getting a card for it, just not at the local grocery store.

For those who care/want to laugh, these are the national "holidays" or days that American's have. I do not know a single person who has any idea what most of these are, other than the person who writes these websites.

Most American's do not celebrate Grandparents Day. Even though this is an American Holiday. Ours is in September.

When I was a child in the late 70's and 80's, our school would do a spaghetti lunch for the Grandparents that could come in to the school. That is it. The extent of celebrating Grandparents Day in the US. I have never even seen a Hallmark card for Grandparents Day, but I am of the generation that does not buy/send tree killing cards, so maybe they have them now?

Like any holiday, if you want to and have a good relationship with your Grandchildren, by all means go ahead. But please remember my post in that it is not that big of a holiday in the US either.

I agree with the PP who said if it is painful due to estrangement, do not invite it in. That is what I have done with my mother and it works for me and the children. For us, there is no need to celebrate someone who was a horrible mother and grandmother.

We all have a choice of celebrating holidays. FWIW, I also ignore Valentine's Day and St Patrick's Day and Columbus Day.

Yes, originally it was, but over time it evolved into earthly mothers. You only break the Lentern fast for one day. 40 days and nights is a long fast without a break! Laetare Sunday is another name for Mothering Sunday. Gaudete Sunday is the third Sunday in Advent, nothing to do with Lent.

Grandparents are mothers and fathers, so they get to be celebrated as part of those celebrations, I really can’t see the point in another separate day specifically for them.

It didn't really require a lot of effort on my part to become a grandparent!

Never heard of it but I'm amused by all the negativity. No one forces anyone to buy cards or celebrate any given day, so why the hostility? If it's not for you (as many other "accepted" special days won't be), then just ignore it. I'm sure some people will benefit enormously from such a reminder, but as with every celebratory day, it's not for everyone.

I'm amazed that people haven't heard of Refreshment Sunday! It's the fourth Sunday in Lent. Christians fasted for the whole of Lent as Christ did in the wilderness, some still do, but on this Sunday for one day the fast was lifted. It doubles up for Mothering Sunday, which is actually what it was originally called as people visited their mother's on this day taking a small gift,flowers,cake or whatever and broke their fast with family.

When it first came out it was 26 September but I don't think it took off.

Being estranged from your grandchildren is undoubtedly very difficult for those involved, but we cannot run our lives around the possibility that someone might be upset by any action we might make.

if that was so we would not do anything: not buy food because it would upset the hungry, live in the street, not in a house because it would upset the homeless, not buy clothes, not go on holiday, not even walk down the street because someone else somewhere couldn't do it and could be upset.

I am completely neutral on Grandparents day, but i certainly do not see the fact that it might upset some grandparent somewhere a good reason not to celebrate it

For all the grandparents who are denied their Grandchildren, acknowledging the American grandparents day would bring even more heartache, so let's not take on this day.

Ha! Mine just about manage Mother’s Day - and not even that when my eldest was married to his manipulative wife. At least that’s better now. Personally I would rather not have a Grandparent’s Day. I don’t wamy anyone to feel pressurised into expressing feelings that may not be genuine and spending their money unnecessarily

What on earth is 'Refreshment Sunday'? I could do with some refreshment every day - not just Sunday.

It sounds like a good idea - if you give up eg chocolate or wine for Lent you can eat chocolate and drink wine on Refreshment Sundays.

A card or a small gift on Mothers day or Refreshment Sunday is quite nice particularly for children , but the others are just silly and a way to get people to part with their money. I certainly don't wish my much loved grandchildren to give me more than a passing thought in their very busy lives on a designated day or any other day come to that.
