How do you organise your wardrobe?

I would just like my clothes to stand still and not hide.
I spent weeks looking for a long navy cardi I was particularly fond of, Monsoon circa 2005 , and eventually reluctantly came to the conclusion it must have gone to the charity shop .
So I replaced it.

And of course found it (where it should have been) after I had worn the second one which I could then no longer return.
Black linen trousers have similarly gone walkabout until I bought a “replacement “ pair.
All this decluttering is working out expensive.

Crikey, organise - er, no. Three wardrobes in the box room have things I rarely wear, along with out of season coats and jackets. A clothes rail and tall chest of drawers in a bedroom is where I keep the stuff I usually wear.

Only thick jumpers are ever put away for the summer (in the ottoman bed, in suitcases). Everything else is just where I last put it. That seems normal enough for me.

My DDs say I am annal about sorting my clothes. I had to be organised at work. One is getting like me the other is chaotic.
All clothes are hung in their category long to short pale to dark
Bras, pants, and socks in three drawers in a tall boy. Tunics, Long sleeved t's,short-sleeved t's rolled in three drawers. Cardigans light to dark rolled in the under-bed drawer.
Seasonal coats, jackets and hats on the coat stand. Shoes in a seat with baskets in the hall.Hats and gloves and scarves in a chest of drawers in the hall. Handbags in storage boxes on the wardrobe shelf.Night ware in wardrobe drawer.Dirty clothes in the basket
Out-of-season clothes in the spare room wardrobe and drawers sorted the same.
My DD's party piece is telling how when they went to parties when little another mum would say"Here are the colour coordinated ......s.
I do hang on to things I shouldn't and the thirty-day challenge got me to organise the rest of the house.

My DH and I used to share one closet, which as sliding mirrored doors and is about 6' long. Since the kids have grown and gone, I have the closet to myself, and his clothes are in a separate room.

All my 'ordinary' clothes are on the right side, with trousers and jean, then tops, cardigans or zip hoodies to the right. Sweaters are folded on a top shelf, and there is a shoe rack at the bottom. Afraid to say some books are piled in there as well.

My nicer, or holiday clothes are on the left side, dresses, tops and skirts. Below is the laundry basket and carry on luggage.

I also have a dresser for t-shirts, underwear, nighties and work out clothes.

All could do with a bit of editing.

Jeans, chinos, trousers to the left of my big old wardrobe, then short sleeved tops or sleeveless , then tops and shirts with long sleeves then dresses.
Jumpers, cardies and jackets and coats in built in wardrobe in guest room.
Undies and socks and pjs in tall chest of drawers.
Shoes and boots and slippers in cupboard in our tiny hallway.

If only. I often envy those who can be more relaxed and happy with disorder around them. For some reason it stresses me out.

I fold jumpers, place on shelves, as I do all 100 pair of jeans and 1000 t shirts (long and short sleeve). I live in jeans and t shirts.

Do you really have 1000 tops Norah, if so, wow! I’ve culled mine, and I think I’ve still got a lot, probably about 50 all in if you count T-shirts and shirts/blouses. No so many jeans either, I’ve probably got about 10 pairs including chinos. My weakness is coats, I don’t throw them away and I’ve probably got about 15.

No, probably 100. I was being silly! Jeans/ trousers maybe 50.

I do carefully keep my clothing forever, I wear classics.

If you think about it, t-shirts are elbow length, long sleeve, nice looking or really tatty for gardening, dog walking, hoovering.

I have worn the same classic tailored, straight, silk column dresses - forever, for all dress occasions - boring, and I love jewelry.

Like you, I also love coats - short, long, knee length - heavy, lightweight, some with sleeves, some without. And jackets.

Jeans,' leggings, jumpers, cardigans, t-shirts' skirts, tunics, dresses and miscellaneous in that order, colour sorted from dark to light in each section of clothing. Nice expensive clothing in clothes bags in a separate wardrobe space.

Gundy No concerns, it is just that 'clutter', roughly defined as more stuff than I know what to do with, causes me real stress.

I too worked at a professional level, although I retired many years ago, but even then, my work/leisure clothes collections was quite pared down. Since retiring my clothes collection has been stable. I seem to be the only person who doesn't like wearing 'lounge wear'. That is limited todays when i do not feel well.

I have always managed to combine looking smart , with dressing comfortably. Currently wearing wide-legged cotton print trousers, plain T shirt and and matching long sleeved top. very comfortable, so who needs 'lounge wear'?

MOnica - It makes me ill too to think of my clothing bounty now that I’m retired. Currently I need only half the clothes (or less) with my chilled out lifestyle.

My accumulation came during my professional years which required a different kind of wardrobe. For 20 years I had to dress in a leadership/management position. I retired two years ago. Then there was my volunteering job which required a more sporty/casual twist. Now I can live out the rest of my life in my “jammies!”

I still haven’t culled out my closets. I don’t know what I’m waiting for - I have to attack the arsenal!

Someone is going to get lucky at my charities if they wear sz 10 shoes and sized Large garments and Tall pants (I’m 6ft tall!) Those purses! It was never a waste of money - you do what you have to do.

I do rent out part of my garage to someone to store their car in winter. I do love to shop too, with my friends. Some people hate shopping of any kind… and it shows too.

Gundy with your space, I would be renting the storage out to tenants, while I had a small cupboard in the corner with everything in.

I actually feel ill when I read descriptions like yours, what a waste of time shopping and money spent on far more clothes that you can possibly need.

I love clothes and style and get my pleasure in winnowing it down to as few items as possible that I really feed happy in and can discard and replace after a year or so because they are completely worn out.

Oh boy, I couldn’t wait to read what everyone does with their clothes, accessories.

I have two walk-in closets the size of small bathrooms that have built-ins… shelves, hanging rails for short and long garments, racks.

Let’s label them Chaos City 1 and Chaos City 2. While I have some symmetry and organized chaos going I came to the conclusion I have too many clothes. There are days I have nothing to wear and days where I can’t find anything. Proof.

I donate my good clothes to Goodwill or resale, but as soon as I make space it miraculously fills up again. I try to live with this rule: for every new garment I buy, two items MUST be discarded (charity or Biz bag)

Shoes always stored on top shelf in original box - easy to identify and kept in tip-top shape (instead of thrown in the corner or under bed.) Jewelry on one shelf in big multi-drawered jewelry box or in individual manufacturers cases; scarves are pulled through circular plastic shower (curtain) rings and threaded on wooden hangers, then hung up ( they are never wrinkled.) You must fold (most) sweaters, never hang.

It would take me a week to go through everything… I’m sure I’d find what I’ve been looking for. I can’t just throw things out - I have to try everything on first! That’s why I stay away from it. 😱🙄

I downsized last year and now have a 2-bedroom house. Decided no room for wardrobe, so I now have a hanging clothes rail instead, where I put my current season's clothing. (Winter clothes stored in plastic boxes/vacuum bags.) I hang shirts, then shorts and trousers, then dresses, grouping by colour. I don't own any skirts. I got rid of any clothes that don't fit nicely, especially those which showed too much cleavage or upper arm (now a bit too wrinkly to be seen). I also gave away a lot of "smart" blouses and dresses, as I don't really go anywhere smart any more. Comfort and practicality are the most important things for me. I rarely buy new clothes now, get most of my stuff from charity shops (one in one out rule). I bought transparent plastic shoeboxes so I can see all my shoes at a glance - they are stored in a bedroom cupboard.

I'm sorry, I'm another for whom the words 'wardrobe' and 'organise' don't go together....

All winter clothes now stored under bed in spare room or hanging in spare room wardrobe.

Summer clothes in wardrobe in colour sets. Underwear drawer, slips and tights drawer, tops drawers in one of 3 colours and then a night dress, mum, etc drawer.

I have a large double door mirrored wardrobe.

One half stores winter clothing and woollens on top shelf.
The other half stores summer clothing.
Everything except underwear and coats etc are stored in the wardrobe.
I never put shoes in a wardrobe. They are stored downstairs ready for use,
I can’t abide clothes strewn around on floors and surfaces.
Unlike my Dd.

Buy matching hangers,IKEA has nice wood ones,makes it look tidy.I put trousers together and tops with all colours together in the short section,coats & longer dresses colour coded in long section.Transfer season I’m not wearing into spare room closet.
