Washing up brushes ... be still my beating heart!!

I don’t have a dishwasher. I put my washing up brushes……….waits for gasps of horror…….in the washing machine with tea towels, etc.

I don’t have a washing up brush, just dishcloths that go in the washer. I do have a dishwasher though but it’s leaking so need to get a new one.

I have a husband like that. My best knives disappear into the garden, mugs get used as utensils to soak paintbrushes in, and I was extremely offended early on in our marriage to discover he had used my brand new (wedding present) swiss roll baking tin as a receptacle for his paint and roller

Sounds like your husband should sometimes be in the dog house too maddyone!

Don't have one in the kitchen. Have a huge number of dishcloths that go in the hot was. We do, however, wash the cats' bowls with one, in the utility room.

Saw Mary Berry put cloths in the dishwasher so put brushes in as well. The brushes come out fine - I think- but back to boiling the dish cloths I'm afraid...

I don’t use a brush to wash up but if I did I would put it in the dishwasher and keep it as long as possible before replacing it.

Yes washing up brushes regularly go in the dishwasher, on the top shelf, along with scouring sponges.

DH does it occasionally but I don't like putting the brushes in the dishwasher, I think it bends and weakens the bristles. I soak it in bleach (actually, I have two - one bottle brush and one for other jobs)

Toothbrushes I soak in a toothmug with a denture cleaner every Sunday morning. I always hate the idea of germs sitting on them, especially if you have a cold or flu. Surely you are passing yesterday's bad germs on to yourself and perpetuating the sickness.

And I have always fancied Andy Garcia, too. Unfortunately the voice he is dubbed with in German is absolutely awful.

I bought my DIL several good saucepans and my son mixed cement in the biggest one. Also knives which he used for DIY.

We use KitchenCraft pan scrapers which are like a smaller version of a pastry scraper and last forever. You can use it to scrape food and burnt on bit from pans and plates and you don't get a clogged washing up brush to clean. Apart from this we just use cheap non-scratch sponges and throw them away regularly.
This brand of scrapers seem to have been discontinued but if you put "pan scraper" in a search box you can find something similar.

Joseph Joseph (kings ransom) - but hangs on the edge of the sink and the bristles last for ever - so yep it does get a dish wash from time to time. I do know what Ikea ones cost but can't get there from here...

cc oh you made me laugh about the cement, but it’s not really funny is it? So annoying when you find your good kitchen ware being incorrectly used.
I bake a lot and DH used my extremely expensive and good Victoria sandwich pans to roast potatoes in, which of course got stuck, and so he scratched right through to the metal trying to get them out! They were quite new too. I made him buy me some more, but I doubt it’ll make any difference. It’s been happening for 48 years now.

What about lavatory brushes?

I always put the washing up brush in the top rack of the dishwasher - no problem. I got a really sturdy brush in the sale at Dunelm.
It always annoys me when holiday cottages, etc. don’t supply a brush - just a cloth! 🙄

Lakeland! The blue ones (see photo), two in a pack, last for absolutely ages. I don't put mine in the dishwasher. I can't remember when I last bought them. Lakeland stuff is excellent quality and value for money.

I have a lot of bone-handled knives that have to be hand washed. The temperature of the dishwasher would make the handles fall off. They are family heirlooms so I'd hate that to happen. I've got a fair few and they are brilliant for spreading but I won't share them with my three adult children because I know they'd ruin them in their dishwashers. I also have good quality kitchen knives that shouldn't go in the dw, and of course your wooden spoons and spatulas shouldn't go in either. So washing up brushes are needed in our house.

I always thought that putting a brush in the dishwasher would trap all the food debris in the bristles. I just soak mine in a bleach solution along with the surface cleaning cloths.

Mine go in the dishwasher in the cutlery receptacle on the lower shelf. I do that at least once a week or when I remember.

Loo brushes are easy. I flush the loo, pour some of the bleach-type fluid in, add the brush, leave until the loo needs to be used, flush the loo, holding on to the brush and everything is clean again.

I also clean fridge shelves in the dishwasher. I bring the glass to room T, put through the dishwasher and they are sparkling.

End of each day I soak my dish cloth and brush in disinfectant and boiling water. In the washing up bowl. No idea if it has any benefits but my Mum did hers in Dettol every night so I guess its in the Genes.

I put all mine in the dishwasher, dish brushes, nail brushes and a toothbrush I keep in the kitchen to clean my garlic press etc.

Knitted dishcloths get bleached every day along with the brush. At the end of a week cloths go in hot wash and brush in the dishwasher.
