Toys from Your childhood

I had a doll called Twinkle, she had long blonde hair and my brother's girlfriend ( he was 11 yrs older than me) had a selection of clothes made for her.
She also cut her hair at my request as as was training to be a hairdresser, it did not work . I named her after a singer from the late 60s who sang a song about her boyfriend being killed in a motorbike accident. 😏Unfortunately I didn't keep her.

My dolls' house was a favourite toy and I, too, loved the Bunty paper dolls! I would make my own clothes for her. Happy memories of simple pleasures.

I was like you GSM an only child and only maternal grandchild we weren’t that well off so I wasn’t spoiled materialistically but I did have a lot of my grandparents time and I was probably a bit too protected which didnt really help when I went into the big wide world but that was no one’s fault it’s just what it was
I too was really upset that my farmyard and dolls house went even though I left home and didn’t return to live I don’t even know when it went
I ve still got a bookcase full of my childhood books three or four shelves full up in the attic

My 'house' was the garden shed and I had my dolls cot, etc in there. The boy next door had a shop in his shed so I used to push my Tiny Tears in her pram round to his garden to do my shopping. He had a toy till and money and our mums kept us empty boxes and jars to play with. Those days were wonderful, we were so happy playing away all day long.

My Sindy doll, Sooty and Sweep puppets and I loved Judy girls' paper.

I still have a doll whose hair I washed at some stage so it never looked the same again. DGd plays with it now. Also a Viewmaster, I think that’s what they were called, that you put a kind of slide in and you can look into it and see 3d images, Images from the Mary Poppins film was a favourite. I loved it but don’t know why I’ve held on to it, don’t think it would impress these days!

When I was a child we got two goats and named them Norah and Tilly. Was it Woman's Realm? That's the magazine my mother had.

I think it was Woman and Home. We had to wait till the next magazine before we could cut the dolls out and it was a monthly.

My grandmother had a wooden bagatelle that we were allowed to play with when went to her house. Also loved dressing cut out dolls and making families from plasticine.

I still have my dog on wheels from the 1950s I also have a doll Tressy “her hair grows” various cars. Sadly no longer have my spirograph or viewmaster. I do still have the majority of my Lego from childhood.

My favourite toy was always a teddy bear that had been given to me by an older friend when he ‘grew out of it’. It was bald in places but well loved by me and later on by my children. Despite the fact that I didn’t like them, I had a few dolls, one of which walked and talked. I don’t know what happened to them, they were in pristine condition because I never played with them. Apart from that, I loved a baking set, of pastry board, rolling pin, bowl and spoon all carved from wood. I loved the shape of the bowl, and kept it for years after I stopped playing with the set.

Actually I’ve just realised that what I really liked was books, and that any toys bought for me were hardly looked at. When people cottoned on to this, I was always given books rather than toys.

Oldbat1 people tell me my dog looks the same as the dog that you have with the wheels on it.

I remember a toy sweet shop and a post office, twin dolls that my darling mum had knitted different coloured outfits for but my favourite was my teddy (called Edward). Unfortunately our dog chewed half his face off but my mum had done a hasty repair job by the time I came home from school! I still have him and at some time in the past I have knitted him a little cardigan to keep him warm. I know this sounds odd but when I look at him I can still feel the love I had for him all those years ago. And I still love teddies and have quite a few dotted around the house

I had post office set printing set blackboard paper dress up dolls colouring books etc. I always wanted a Tressy doll (her hair grows) but never got one. I loved to read but only ever got one book from an auntie one Christmas I loved it.

I think my favourite toys were a dolls pram, that mum and dad had got second hand and refurbished. Grandad's chickens got rides in the pram, as well as my little black 'sorbo' boy doll, that mum had knitted a smart red outfit for.
Dad also made me a dolls house, with electric lights. The roof had paper tiles, and mum made curtains etc for it.
Also remember having paper dress up dollies, and lots of books, and a Post Office set.
I did have a lot of the Chalet School books, but they got thrown away, or re- homed, when I left home.
Loved Magic painting books, where you used only plain water, and the colours were revealed.

I think the metal skates that have been mentioned were called JACO Skates.

I've just remembered my hairdressing set. You put batteries in the hairdryer to make a noise, there were curlers and all kinds of brushes. I tortured my family wanting to give them a hairdo and pulling the head off them with the little combs.

I've enjoyed reading all your posts of childhood memories and our treasured toys and games. Mums seemed to have the habit of making some of them disappear over the years.

The only thing I had was a tea set that my eldest brother bought for me the day I was born. Its been all through the London Blitz when being carted in and out of the Anderson shelter and to me after all the trauma of that era it was a miracle that it had not suffered being smashed to pieces but here it is with just a chip out of the tea pot spout and one cup that had to be glued together. It will be 93 years old in May and has pride of place in my d-i-ls cabinet where she wants it until ready to pass on to my granddaughter.

What a beautiful tea set. How lovely that it will be kept in the family.
