That's true about ticks and you have to be vigilant but you don't get ticks at the seaside and you definitely get midges.
I once camped at the water's edge on the Ardnamurchan peninsular and wondered why this beautiful place was deserted. About 5 pm I discovered.

I've used a natural one in Australia which seemed to be effective but not sure if it's available here. However, the active ingredients seem to be:

Lemongrass Oil
Thyme Oil
Lavender Oil
Eucalyptus Oil

My late father used to smoke a pipe. He only ever smoked outside including on walks and was ever so popular as the midges kept about a 1-2m social distance away from the pipe smoke!

You won't get ticks on the beach but they are still in the woods long grass, ferns, heather etc I live at the seaside in the west highlands but we still have to have tick protection for our dog or he'd be covered in them every day.

We were in the Outer Hebrides from 1st - 6th of June and had the most glorious weather. We did not see a drop of rain nor a single midge. One day Stornoway was said to be the hottest place in the UK. Unfortunately this idyllic weather can't be guaranteed at any time of the year. I hope that you will be as lucky as we were.

Yes ticks have become more of a problem in recent years.
My DD and her family in the Highlands have to check for ticks every day and she has become adept at removing them.
