Double glazing salesman

People need jobs/money.

I decided a while ago to say I did not own my house and so far it has worked but luckily because of lockdown I have had very few people at my door. It is my non-existent son who organises everything for me.

He’s probably desperate for money. Most of those jobs are commission only.

We had one call at the begining of the week too, from Anglian windows. I was amazed when I heard him telling OH why he had knocked the door.

I think they are considered self employed but as most dont hav epremies of their own they wont get any of the furlough or grants etc that hav ebeen on offer.Its been a long time since March lockdown without an income ,not just for double glazing salesmen but for a lot of self employed people .Millions didn't fit any criteria for help

I have been known to put on an accent anyone on East Enders would be proud of and say something like....
“Oh bless you love it aint my ‘ouse I’m the cleaner “

I didn't know door to door double glazing salesmen still existed. Indeed it is decades since I last remember someone calling door to door, except for, very occasionally, about every 5 years or so, charity chuggers and Jehovah's Wtnesses and the like.

Me neither so I would suspect a scam.

Yes we had one from a local company, he looked quite anxious asking if we were thinking of replacing any of our relatively new windows, guttering or fascia boards.
I said no of course not then he started on about would we like to think about a conservatory, free quote etc etc.
People are really desperate out there I’m afraid.

We don’t get house callers, we are very rural and even if they did find us they would have to get past the dogs first!

I rarely get salesmen at the door these days and have a spyhole which helps - but sometimes I get caught out. What I dislike most is when they turn their backs to the door to survey the front garden as their faces can't be seen. Now I don't answer the door at all if I can't identify them unless I'm expecting a delivery. We've had reports of criminals or conmen using their distraction tactics round here so I'm wary.

People are still trying to sell windows, doors, gardening, you name it, someone wants you to buy it from them.
Paddyanne summarises the situation for so many 'self employed' people in the current climate. They aren't eligible for any financial help or UC.
There has been a move to people being self employed, like salespeople, beauty therapists, cleaners etc, to avoid employers being responsible for anything.

He' s probably been sent out there by a boss trying to bring in some money.I always stay polite and sort of " we have all we need ", only trying to earn a crust.

Had someone at door giving usual story of just having fitted Mrs Blah
Blah's in another road's kitchen would I be interested in having mine done. Just told him I have a family member who does that and wiukd be a lot cheaper. Door to door selling still goes on. Think there will be an increase given the current state of economy.

I’m guessing it’s about the only time they can guarantee most people are at home.

I would worry that he was not genuine. This is often a ploy by crooks to get inside a house for various nefarious reasons.

We had Anglian rep. call round between lockdowns. He had stepped back at least 3 metres and I was a few feet back in my porch. We had an interesting chat about windows even though I had told him I was not about to change any of mine. Can’t blame him for trying,

Jennifer Eccles that's also my trick - but I have used my own creation of a suspicious sounding 'foreign' accent that could be Eastern European, Pakistani - or even Irish. However, no one has ever asked where I am from and they just go!

We have been plagued with folks who want the little money we have - my DDs have decided they are going to take out power of attorney to stop us doing something silly (we have done in the past). Now we just say we will have to discuss it with DDs because they have Power of attorney and they disappear!!

How do you know he was a double glazing salesman if you didn’t open the door?

Why not get one of those stickers for the front door saying 'No buying at door' 'No religious groups' etc. It's worked for us. Often you get travellers trying to flog roofing/guttering clearance/driveways etc.

I know people need the money ,so have to work, but surely this could spread the virus really quickly

I have some sympathy even for call Centre operatives it’s the only job they can get, minimum wage, I try not to be rude, but sometimes it is hard

We have a local police issued sticker saying no cold callers right beside the doorbell he rang, he still called . And he also had the cheek to say "I was just saying to my colleague I haven't seen a solid door like this (our chosen front door last year) for years". When my OH said we had opted to have it like that he didn't know what to say.

We occasionally have the "we have just done work for number .. " Oh really, like anyone is going to believe that.
We have even had them walk up our paved drive to see if we want a new paved drive!
