Invasion of privacy despite Data Protection rules

I am increasingly annoyed when I am asked my d.o.b when accepting a delivered package! Also, having just come off a website offering to "chat by way of enquiry" I asked a simple question but they wanted my name, phone no. and email address. I was just enquiring whether they offered a particular service and it did not need my details at that stage. Think how careful we have to be under the new Rules when running a database for, say, a small Club where we know everybody mostly, yet we are constantly asked personal info. by complete strangers, when they don't need it! Does everybody else feel the same as me, or am I turning into a grumpy old woman!

I couldn’t care less if Sainsbury’s profile me, and I know that anything I post or buy is giving information. I think most people know all of that but swap privacy for convenience, as the data isn’t particularly personal, so long as you turn off the setting that allows sites like Amazon to ‘see’ all your searches on other sites.

My objection is to being asked to disclose information in front of others, particularly if I might know them vaguely (eg in a doctor’s waiting room).

It seems odd to me that there is so much store set by data protection (eg not making university timetables public so that possible stalkers can’t wait outside of teaching rooms), yet receptionists routinely ask for dates of birth and addresses to be given out loud when checking in patients.
