After 34years of happy Marriage, we are now forced to sleep apart in separate rooms due to health reasons. It started a few years ago after he had surgery for kidney stones, and ended up with an external ‘plumbing’ system fitted for many months which sometimes leaked at night and left us both soaking wet if we accidentally nudged the connections in our sleep.
Then l was prescribed a c-pap machine for a long term lung condition which was far from quiet when it was switched on during the night, so at this point we decided that separate rooms would be best, so at least one of us could get a decent nights sleep. Ten years on, and once our daughter left home to go to university, we stared having alterations done to our house to make it possible for me to live entirely on the ground floor, with my own bathroom and bedroom, but retaining our shared lounge and kitchen for use in the day. We also installed a stair lift to give me the option of going upstairs if l so wished to do so. This has worked well for us both as an alternative to moving into sheltered housing. Our daughters and grandchildren live close by, we have all the community resources we need and know well right on our doorstep, we are happy with each other still, even if we no longer share a bed every night, and my husbands ‘external plumbing’ has long gone thanks to our NHS, and the wonderful surgeon who mended him for good!
