Bearcock . Bowcock. Babcock, Higginbottom .the funniest was two males one was Ivor Wright and the other Ivor Whitehead honest to god it’s true,

I went to school with a girl called Sonia Wiley ( honestly), and as an adult working in primary school met a cute little one called Byron Whipple.

Elcie Mon 16-Dec-19 15:27:08

Oops! That first name should have read Sonia Willey ?

pinkquartz Mon 16-Dec-19 15:37:19

Oh didn't notice that is the third De'ath in the thread.

I wonder if they are related to each other.

When I worked at a building society forty years ago, we had an account in the name of Fanny Peasgood. True! And a local solicitors' firm is called Wright Hassall.

My childhood dentist was Mr.Smylie and my husband worked with a Phil Brain aka P.Brain!

There was a girl in the sixth form when I was in the fourth whose surname was spelled Rowbottom - she insisted it be pronounced Rowbotham.

Even if Smellie was pronounced as Smiley, there were those who stuck to Smellie. Naughty children used to ring up, ask, "Are you Smellie?" and when the person replied, "Yes" say, "Then why don't you take a bath?"

grandtanteJE65 Mon 16-Dec-19 16:26:48

I forgot, we had a vet who was Mr. Lyon.

There was a teacher at my school called Mr shippabottom (not sure if I have spelled that properly but that's how it was pronounced). You can imagine what the kids used to call him behind his back.

As a telephonist at an engineering firm, a valued client was called "Bassidrush". I always wanted to call him Mr Basil Brush and had to be very careful when announcing him to managers taking his call.

I also worked with a young woman, married to a Mr Pepper, who insisted that she intended to call the little boy she was expecting "Zoltan". I'm not sure if she carried out that intention, as she did not return to work after maternity leave. I sincerely hope she was joking!

Nutter is a famous name in Bradford Bradfordlass isn't it, Mr nutter left money for a home for orphan boys they want to knock it down, there is still a charity that helps families who are down on their luck. Another local family is the Pratts, but I don't think anyone knew of silly prats in those days. My children giggled at the shop Brown Muffs but back in the day a muff was just something ladies used in winter. I met an elderly scot years ago called James riddle and yes people called him Jimmy. One of my male family had to go to a urologist Mr waterfall which is a lovely name anpd very apt.
On one twig of our family tree we have a Priestley Bacon, which makes me think of what the vicar has for brekkie. It's not uncommon in Yorkshire to give the mothers maiden name as a middle or first name. Not on our tree, but a forename I found while searching for forebears _ Herod. We think of the victorians as religious but they obviously weren't listening to the readings to find out what the herods did, just thought it was a nice name. SeeAlways thought it would be a bummer of a name if he'd been an orphanage worker
